Beckett 20 Questions: Collecting game-used

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

The next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly is in production, and it’s  going to focus on all things game-used memorabilia.

From game-used cards to the ins and outs of the game-used market, we’re aiming to touch on what matters most to collectors and we want to know what you think beyond your buying habits when it comes to game-used.

Here, we present 20 questions on the topic — some serious, some fun — that we want to know your answers for. We’ll present some of your comments and the voting results in the next issue.

1. Which company made the first sports memorabilia card back in 1996?

Your Turn (BSCM Game-used Issue) — What are your thoughts on memorabilia cards these days?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

In an upcoming issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’re going to explore the world of game-used cards and memorabilia.

While we haven’t yet ironed out all of the items we’ll have inside this year’s edition of The Game-used Issue — there are lots of options — one thing we know we do want is to hear from you. We want to know a few things about what you think about game-used, what you collect and how you collect.

Give us your name and location and answer the following six questions … we’ll run a selection of the most-interesting answers in the issue.

1. Name, where from and what game-used stuff do you collect?

2. What one type of game-used item (any sport) do you prefer?

3. Who do you trust when it comes to authenticity statements for items or cards?

Your Turn (BSCM Rookies Issue): If you could own only one RC, what would it be?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Give or take an anomaly here and there, did you know that there are a mere 148,003 Rookie Cards cataloged on Beckett.com alone?

We’re sure you did, and that number will stand for a whole day or two until the next new product arrives — but that’s not what we’re here for today. We’re here to ask you a simple question for the upcoming Rookies Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly:

If you could only own a single Rookie Card — just one — what would it be?

Tell us in the comments below and be sure to include your name and location. We’ll run a selection of the best replies in the issue.

Beckett 20 Questions: Rookies, RCs & collecting

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We’re prepping this year’s Rookies Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly soon and one thing is clear.

Rookie Cards reign in the hobby.

Whether it’s vintage firsts or modern-day rarities, RCs seem to demand our attention the most — so much so it can defy logic at times. Want a fresh sign of that? Panini America started selling Rated Rookie t-shirts last night — a rookie brand is now a clothing line.

When it comes to RCs, though, there are plenty of unclear areas, too. There are also many a personal definition for what is and what isn’t an RC and there are plenty of prospecting products that just make those personal tastes even harder to define.

We want to know what you think beyond your buying habits when it comes to Rookie Cards. Here, we present 20 rookie-focused questions — some serious, some fun — that we want to know your answer on. We’ll present some of your comments and the voting results in the issue after we see the results.

1. After six years, do you feel the Rookie Card logo is working in MLB?

AT THE NATIONAL: A post-show mega-gallery

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

A week has gone by since the close of this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention and there’s plenty that could be said, that could be written, about what could be found under one roof during the hobby’s showcase event.

From “extra” DNA Relics found in the bottom of one collector’s Allen & Ginter box (a Texas lizard in the wrong place at the wrong time at the printing plant) to countless vintage gems, from vintage wax to priceless auction items, from kids sorting soccer cards with their grandmas to kids walking the show floor in movie-used Jack Parkman jerseys, there was plenty to see.

If you followed me on Twitter during the show, you’ve undoubtedly seen a few of these already. But with the deadline clock ticking and more to do for your next magazines, this chapter of the NSCC — all except for some video still to come — is closing with a massive 97-image gallery after the jump.

It’s just a small glimpse at much of what was seen at the show — check them out and let us know what you think. After all, a picture’s worth a thousand words — so there’s plenty that could be said.

Preview Gallery: 2012 Press Pass Redline

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Some might say that NASCAR’s colorful firesuits and sheet metal means it easy to provide impressive memorabilia cards, but Press Pass‘ latest effort just might blow the engines of the most-hardened collectors.

And that’s exactly what the intent is with 2012 Press Pass Red Line as there are two autographs and two memorabilia cards in every single box of the high-end product that arrives on July 5.

As previously reported here, these tins will include at least one autographed memorabilia card, and we’ve got an extensive preview gallery of cards that will be found in the product that you can see here … after the jump.

Are you a SuperCollector? We want your info!

Update: CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATED STEPS ON HOW TO PREPARE YOUR SUBMISSION

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We’re going to dedicate an entire issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly to SuperCollectors soon — and we want to see your collections.

We’ll pick the most interesting and most outrageous submissions for that issue of the magazine just like the 15 we showcased last summer, but first we need to hear about your stash. Some will make the special issue, while others will appear in the magazines leading up to that issue. (We run SuperCollectors every month.)

As a bonus, all collectors who submit information between now and July 15 will be entered in a drawing for a Mike Trout autographed baseball as well as a hefty six-autograph card seen here. Follow the instructions and submit your stats and story today. We’re showing you all of last year’s submissions so you can see who — and what — made the cut.

We hope you can top them.  You don’t have to have the most-expensive collection on the block but it needs to be unique — downright crazy — in some way that it stands out.

Here are your instructions …

Send in an email to beckettsupercollector@gmail.com the following information:

Will you take the $10 Card Shop Challenge?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

It’s time for another version of the $10 Card Shop Challenge Are you ready? The deadline is Friday, June 15 …

Here is the back story — and the instructions are after the jump.

An after-work card shop visit long ago prompted a challenge to one of my Twitter followers, so I sent another message to the masses curious few who enjoy hearing not much from me 140 characters a time on my Twitter feed. I issued a collecting challenge. It’s time to do it again.

A few replied seeking details, but this time I’m taking it a step further as I want to see what many of you can come up with by hitting your local card shop. (If you don’t have an LCS, hit a retail store.) Call it the $10 Card Shop Challenge.

How did your dad pass the trading card torch?

By Andrew Tolentino | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Unlike many collectors I’ve heard from, my dad and I never had that “passing the torch” moment with a single sports card — or any sports cards for that matter. In fact, short of a microscope, a rock cleaning kit and an army-issued shovel (which may or may not be street legal), he never really gave me any of his personal relics at all.

Do I resent him for that? Absolutely not. How could I?

As much as I’d like to talk about some *Pulp Fiction-esque moment when a Christopher Walken-like figure handed over my father’s cardboard bequest, I just can’t. Even though he never dusted off some old shoebox and handed me some dog-eared heirloom, my dad still helped me find my way as a young collector. (*Explicit language)

With Father’s Day coming up, I’d like to invite collectors to share their dad-related hobby memories, with or without the Hallmark moment. I’ll kick things off with a few of my own. Read More »

One’s a man in black and the other is the son of a man in black.

But, together, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Batman will team up on the track as the son of the seven-time Cup champ will race a Chevy Impala designed with The Dark Knight Rises on its paint scheme.

While the film opens on July 20, Earnhardt will drive one of four paint schemes — all of which will have diecast replicas made by Lionel NASCAR Collectibles  — on June 17 at Michigan. (Need an Earnhardt Jr. checklist or OPG? Click here.)

Press Pass fixes Keselowski autopen issue in Ignite

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

With Press Pass’ new racing product 2012 Ignite  hitting the street, some collectors noticed something strange on Brad Keselowski’s autographed Ignite Ink cards.

It didn’t seem as though they were hand-signed — each was the same size with exact strokes and ink widths.

Unfortunately, Press Pass learned Keselowski’s autograph sheet – as opposed to individual cards – were signed using an autopen, which is a machine used for automatic signatures.
