What if you could find anything on a card?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary & Opinion

What if you could open a pack of cards and find absolutely anything inside … what would it be?

It’s a simple question that could have so many answers from so many people if the real-world realities of intellectual property rights, personality rights and so on didn’t exist. You know, that’s the stuff that all involves money if a product is to be sold using somebody’s owned logos, names, trademarks and so on.

For some of us out there, fantasy cards can become a reality when we sit down with a copy of Photoshop and make those ideas happen just for fun. However, in the real world for cards to exist and be sold there are plenty of legal hurdles that must be cleared. With the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’re taking a look at sports movies and their memorabilia, and one short column in that issue talks about one of my “other” hobbies and how it came about.

What’s my niche? When it comes to fantasy cards, I’ve dabbled here and there with cards of sports stars from movies. Why? Why not. They’re just for fun, of course.

Beckett 20 Questions on … sports movie items

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

With a new blockbuster sports movie coming next month in 42, the latest Sports Movies Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly is set to arrive as well with our latest look at collecting things from a slightly different perspective or with a slightly different approach.

You know, one that lets you explore stuff that’s already out there once again — or perhaps dig a little deeper on the auction block where one might not normally look.

Sometimes, it’s a real-world story that shows up on the big screen like in the case of Jackie Robinson‘s tale or even someone perhaps less-remembered in history like Vince Papale here. (In the case of Papale, being the subject of a film where he was played by Mark Wahlberg sparked serious demand for the value of his 1977 Topps Rookie Card.) Other times, we get fictional characters and stories that we all remember and appreciate over time for some of those similar peculiarities or details that we latch onto as collectors in real life.

For this issue, we’re curious about what you think, what you remember and what you know about sports films. Here’s the latest 20 Questions on the topic … after the jump.

Danica’s Daytona showing should sell some cards

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor | Commentary

Danica Patrick wrote herself into the record books on Sunday as the best-finishing woman to compete in NASCAR’s premiere event, the Daytona 500, when she finished eighth in a race won by five-time Sprint Cup champ Jimmie Johnson.

Of course, earlier in the day, Patrick became the first woman to lead a lap in the race and she was the first to win the pole for the event when she took it last week. The best previous finish for a woman in the race was Janet Guthrie, who finished ninth in 1978.

The 30-year-old is embarking on her first season as a full-time driver in the highest level of stock-car racing this season after a couple seasons as a part-timer. She’s already a big-time player on the card circuit, though, as she appears on more than 840 different cards and diecasts made through the years with a total value of $31,336.25 not including those pieces that are too rare to track. (Click here for a full checklist and Online Price Guide.)

Will Danica Patrick’s cards make a historic move?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Danica Patrick wrote herself into the record books on Sunday when she became the first woman to win the pole for NASCAR’s premiere race, the Daytona 500.

The 30-year-old is embarking on her first season as a full-time driver in the highest level of stock-car racing this season after a couple seasons as a part-timer and a big-time player on the trading card circuit.

And that raises the question … could her cardboard be making a move next? Her potential wasn’t lost on Press Pass, the exclusive trading card manufacturer for NASCAR, which has included her in products — and on the packaging of boxes — since 2010 when she was merely a part-time driver.

“Danica consistently sells in the top five among current drivers,” said Press Pass VP of Brand Management Tom Farrell in the February issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly. “Dale Earnhardt Sr. likely still reigns supreme, and it’s tough to compare to The King, Richard Petty, however, her fan base is enormous and they enthusiastically chase her cards.”

Press Pass honors Davey Allison in 2013 products

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

The new racing season is almost here and Press Pass is gearing up for its start. Throughout the year, the company will deliver products with unique memorabilia and autograph cards.

However, Press Pass isn’t just looking ahead to new and popular drivers. The company is taking time to remember racing’s past honoring Davey Allison who died 20 years ago.

“Twenty years later, Davey is still regarded as one of the top competitors in the sport,” Press Pass said in a release. “His talent and competitiveness were matched only by his courage and kindheartedness. Press Pass was in its infancy when Davey passed away, but we strive to honor his legacy.”

Beckett 20 Questions on … the hits

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

If there’s one thing that’s on the minds of collectors besides “What’s new?” and “What’s it worth?” it’s the old standby of the last 15 or so years.

“How many hits?”

While the use of autographs and memorabilia cards in products have revolutionized the hobby, what we call hits seems to meander in meaning from person to person. To some, it’s just those autos and mem cards. To others, it might include cards of other types. The hits have included everything from some star shortstop’s autograph to a piece of Superman’s cape — and seemingly everything else, too.

For the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’re going to focus on “The Hits” — whatever they might be — and here is the latest batch of questions — some serious, some fun — that we’re curious about on the subject. Check them out … after the jump.

Are you up for a new $10 Card Shop Challenge?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

It’s time for another version of the $10 Card Shop Challenge …  Are you ready? The deadline is Friday, Jan. 25 …

Here is the back story — and the instructions are after the jump.

An after-work card shop visit long ago prompted a challenge to one of my Twitter followers, so I sent another message to the masses curious few who enjoy hearing not much from me 140 characters a time on my Twitter feed. I issued a collecting challenge. It’s time to do it again.

A few replied seeking details, but this time I’m taking it a step further as I want to see what many of you can come up with by hitting your local card shop. (If you don’t have an LCS, hit a retail store.) Call it the $10 Card Shop Challenge.

Should you choose to accept this mission, you will add something new to your collection — and maybe something more as I’m going to cough something up for the entry that you guys find to be the most interesting or impressive entry of the bunch.

Beckett 20 Questions on … the ‘other’ sports

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We all know that the collecting world has changed immensely in the last 20 years with explosive growth and massive shrinkage for the mainstay types of sports — baseball, football, basketball and hockey — at varying times as card companies came and went and as labor strife took its toll on fans’ heartstrings.

But, at the same time, one could argue that the “other” sports out there have seen plenty of growth, too, as more and more sports — and some sort-of sports — have made their appearances on cards. You may not find them in every shop or every card aisle at retail every day, but they are out there and they have their passionate collecting bases that keep those products coming back year after year.

In the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’ll take a look at those sports that don’t normally get as much attention — racing, MMA, soccer, boxing, Olympic sports, wrestling, tennis, rodeo and more. Here are 20 questions that we hope you’ll take the time to answer to appear in this next issue.

1. Do you actively collect something other than the "big four" (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) sports?
