Topps Unleashes UFC Knockout Wall Art

Rousey_Art

By Stephen Laroche | Beckett Media

Collectors of mixed martial arts cards and fans of the sport can now display loyalty to their favorite fighters at home as Topps has issued limited wall art for their 2015 UFC Knockout base set exclusively through their online store.

With all 100 cards being faithfully reproduced in a 10″ X 14″ format, there is a solid mix of stars, legends and rising prospects to choose from and the basic version is numbered to just 49 copies. Priced at $24.99 each, some big names could move quite quickly and the competition will be stiff for the gold one-of-one versions that retail for $99.99.

Action has been swift on some of the gold prints as Jessica Eye, Holly Holm, Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, Rose Namajunas, Bec Rawlings, Ronda Rousey, Georges St-Pierre, Ken Shamrock, Paige VanZant, and Cain Velasquez have already sold out.

Top 5: Brock Lesnar trading cards to chase

Lesnar Default Image001

By Matt Bible | Beckett Non-Sports and Gaming Analyst | Commentary

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Matt Bible. And, I’m the one … bringing some news on the one … in 21-1.

WWE champion Brock Lesnar is not going anywhere. Tuesday night, Lesnar told ESPN that he has signed a contract extension with the WWE, effectively ending his MMA career. So, get ready to see more of The Beast Incarnate and his human microphone, Paul Heyman. Well, at least more of Heyman and an occasional Lesnar sighting. The contract is for a part-time schedule similar to the one Lesnar has enjoyed the past three years. More than likely that means sporadic appearances on RAW and every third PPV.

What does this mean for Wrestlemania and Roman Reigns? Who knows? Initially, the rumors were that Lesnar would drop the belt to either Reigns or Seth Rollins (Money-in-the-Bank cash in) and sign a contract with UFC. Now that Lesnar has dropped the ball, the main event at Wrestlemania has regained a bit of mystery. However, something that isn’t mysterious is that Lesnar has some seriously unique cardboard out there on the secondary market. Here are five of his best:

Sunday Conversation: Topps’ Jeff Heckman

JeffHeckman

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Jeff Heckman is a manager of marketing and development for Topps Digital, which helps bring all of the company’s offerings to life via Topps.com. He’s also the subject of this week’s Sunday Conversation.

Q: We last caught up with you last summer for the Beckett Sports Card Monthly Art Issue to take a look at Topps’ new wall art. How busy has the division been during that time and has it grown?
A: We have been very busy developing wall art concepts for Topps.com. Once we made the decision to start offering limited edition wall art in late March 2014, the wall art category really exploded for us. We found the sweet spot of offering a limited number of prints using classic designs from our Archives. The category grew exponentially vs. 2013 to the point where we had demand for two-to-three new wall art offerings per week.

Q: Which lines of wall art were the standouts in the last year? Any that will go back to drawing board for refinement?
A: We were fortunate to have more standouts than flops last year. The biggest standouts were the following collections: Movie pin-up posters, For Mayor, ’59 Logos, Major League, MLB All-Star, Finest 1/1, Past & Present, Concert posters and MLB playoffs. There were definitely a few collections that didn’t live up to our expectations such as Illustrations, because we really liked the design and quality. The real positive from last year is that we were able to get real-time data based on designs, players and teams that we used to improve our wall art collections as the year progressed. We plan to continue to apply these learnings to our 2015 offerings.

Ronda Rousey auction ends at $10,103

$_57

By Matt Bible | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Analyst

Apparently, $10,000 isn’t a stretch at all.

Beckett.com reported on Friday that a 2012 Topps Finest Red Refractor Autograph 1/1 of Ronda Rousey  was up for auction on eBay. The auction was at $5,900 after 56 bids.

Well, the auction has concluded and the card has sold. The final number is staggering and has most likely set a record for autographed UFC cards if it is paid for — $10,103.

Rousey card could be knockout acquisition

By Matt Bible | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Analyst

Even in the card world, Ronda gets a little rowdy.

A seller on eBay is auctioning what could be a record-setter for UFC trading cards — the 2012 Topps Finest UFC Red Refractor Autograph 1/1 of then-UFC rookie fighter, Ronda Rousey.

Yes, just like Rousey, this card is one-of-a-kind. The blue-ink signature is crisp on the card’s scarlet trim and the photo shows her hand being raised in victory, as she has no doubt pummeled another fighter. Now, her card is set to pummel the secondary market. As it currently stands, the card has a high bid of $5,900 after 56 bids.

Are you a SuperCollector? We want your info!

Update: CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATED STEPS ON HOW TO PREPARE YOUR SUBMISSION

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We’re going to dedicate an entire issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly to SuperCollectors soon — and we want to see your collections.

We’ll pick the most interesting and most outrageous submissions for that issue of the magazine just like the 15 we showcased last summer, but first we need to hear about your stash. Some will make the special issue, while others will appear in the magazines leading up to that issue. (We run SuperCollectors every month.)

As a bonus, all collectors who submit information between now and July 15 will be entered in a drawing for a Mike Trout autographed baseball as well as a hefty six-autograph card seen here. Follow the instructions and submit your stats and story today. We’re showing you all of last year’s submissions so you can see who — and what — made the cut.

We hope you can top them.  You don’t have to have the most-expensive collection on the block but it needs to be unique — downright crazy — in some way that it stands out.

Here are your instructions …

How did your dad pass the trading card torch?

By Andrew Tolentino | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Unlike many collectors I’ve heard from, my dad and I never had that “passing the torch” moment with a single sports card — or any sports cards for that matter. In fact, short of a microscope, a rock cleaning kit and an army-issued shovel (which may or may not be street legal), he never really gave me any of his personal relics at all.

Do I resent him for that? Absolutely not. How could I?

As much as I’d like to talk about some *Pulp Fiction-esque moment when a Christopher Walken-like figure handed over my father’s cardboard bequest, I just can’t. Even though he never dusted off some old shoebox and handed me some dog-eared heirloom, my dad still helped me find my way as a young collector. (*Explicit language)

With Father’s Day coming up, I’d like to invite collectors to share their dad-related hobby memories, with or without the Hallmark moment. I’ll kick things off with a few of my own. Read More »

Next Topps UFC product will include fight-used cards somebody sank their teeth into

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

The next UFC release from Topps will be one you can sink your teeth into.

No wait …

The upcoming UFC release from Topps will include one insert set that will have some collectors champing at the bit for a certain few cards.

Err … When 2012 Topps Finest UFC arrives in July, it will include cards that will include complete fight-used mouthpieces embedded into the cards.

“Its just an ongoing effort by our company to be innovative, to push the bounds, to do our best to give our collectors great content and to connect them with their favorite fighters,” said Topps VP Mark Sapir. “We are all about bringing the game, the fight, etc., to our collectors and this is just another special way we plan to do this.”

Hobby Challenge: Make fun of your collection

I'd like the hair on my head to match my mustache, please.

Poking around our hockey forums yesterday afternoon, I stumbled across a thread entitled “HILARIOUS hockey cards! Post em here!” Member tha penguin opened the online floodgates and encouraged fellow collectors to join in on the fun by posting scans of their favorite funny cards with interpretive commentary.

For the most part, hobby hilarity has ensued and the collector challenge has been extended. (More details after the jump.) Read More »

2012 UFC Finest offers more than autos, relics

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

When collectors get their hands on 2012 Topps UFC Finest, they should be on the lookout for Dana White autographs.

The current UFC Prez is one of the most familiar faces, but also pulling his solo autograph means a chance at winning an exclusive UFC trip.

Finest is a comprehensive set when it comes to getting hits. Of course, it has the requisite autos and relic cards, but it includes opportunities to win autographed memorabilia and a trip where a lucky fan and a guest will attend an event and meet fighters.

That all comes in one product 2012 Topps UFC Finest scheduled to be out mid-July.

Your Turn: What’s your favorite autograph?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We’re preparing this year’s edition of The Autograph Issue for Beckett Sports Card Monthly and want to know just one thing from you at the moment.

What’s your favorite autograph (and why)?

Maybe it’s a signed ball or a signed piece of scrap paper from a random meeting. Maybe it’s a certified autograph of a superstar — or maybe not even a sports autograph at all.

Tell us — and be sure to include your name and location, which will appear with your answer in the next issue.

Next Topps UFC product includes fistographs & more

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Collectors often say they want more in a product and in the forthcoming 2012 Topps UFC Knockout they’re going to get just that via the Fistograph.

What’s a Fistograph? It’s an over-sized box-topper that includes not only an autograph but an inked print of a fighter’s fist — you know, an impression of what makes an impression in the sport, albeit typically inside a glove.

Ten different fighters will sign and ink up for the box-toppers in the high-end hobby-exclusive product that will include a hit in every pack and two autographed Relics, two autographs and four Relics in every box. For a look at what else can be found, see a gallery of some cards in the product arriving on Jan. 25 after the jump.
