The arrival of 2009 Topps Triple Threads has seen an influx of impressive Relic and autograph cards arrive on the auction block as the high-end product apparently remains one of the more popular releases.
Here’s a glimpse at some of the cards that collectors have landed … so far.
Does that Masterson card really say Jedi? Also, this card is an epic FAIL in my opinin since Masterson is no longer with the Red Sox.
On another note, I do appreciate Topps’ willingness to give us some sweet looking patches here … except those WBC patches, which should not be in this product.

Why don’t you think WBC patches should be in it???

Of all the cards shown here, I honestly wouldn’t pay more than $3 for a single one. I think these look dreadful at best.

The WBC cards are played out and really should have been released in earlier products.
Seriously, throw those patches into some of the other sets — like Bowman or something and you’d generate some interest there. Here, the high-end collector’s don’t care about those patches, unless of course it’s Darvish, which they then would sell. Heck, is he even in the set?
Seriously, if I am paying $150-$200 a pack/box, I don’t even want a shot at getting a patch card of the second baseman for Taiwan.

Any idea where that sand is from on the Lewis and Clark card? Topps should know better than to go with these dirt/sand cards. It was a failed idea when they intriduced the stuff into 1999 (maybe 2001) Stadium Club. The JFK Berlin Wall card in 01′ Topps American Pie was a disaster, too. What’s funyn id you can buy a good size baggie of Berlin Wall dust for a couple bucks, probably enough to vcreate a few hundred cards like the JFK ones.

I could say the same thing about the second baseman for the Padres.
Honestly, I think Topps is banking on WBC to help increase sales from overseas — and there is still a prospecting-esque element to those cards as well. (We all know the interest in baseball — and cards — doesn’t stop at the U.S. border.)
I do agree it would have been nice to see some more WBC patches in previous products, but I still think the WBC patches are more impressive than a lot of the cards that can be found in these packs.

I’m betting Topps didn’t make a triple relic of the second baseman for the Padres … because they know no one wants it. OK, well maybe Edgar Gonzalez wants it. :)
As for the oversees aspect, I can’t argue with your statement. And I would not want to deter people anywhere buying the product. But I really wonder how the collecting base in the United States, which I’d argue is the primary audience since this product is primarily based on Major League Baseball, feels about these WBC cards. We already know that collectors have already soured on most of them. And now one of these WBC cards could be your single hit in a high-end box is almost off-puting. They should have been sprinkled into other products. Collectors around the world can still appreciate this product without the WBC cards.

[…] Beckett has a recent post featuring some recent pulls submitted by readers from the just release 2009 Topps Triple Threads boxes. It includes the below Trolley Dodgers card featuring 3 Brooklyn heroes and some cut jerseys and bat pieces. Go to their post to see more.Since the above card is the only Dodger one featured I figured I would troll around eBay to see if there are more to be seen. Of course, I was not disappointed. Check out some of them below. […]
