Bird of a Different Feather: Michael Vick Signs with Philadelphia
Look, I’m not even going to get into whether or not Michael Vick is still public enemy No. 1 for his role in the dog-fighting scandal that many thought ruined his career.
I will say that I have an affinity for man’s best friend; in fact, I helped my mom and step-dad raise a backyard kennel full of Pekingnese when I was a kid. And if you can love those flat-face yappers, well, you’re a dog lover.
So while I’d certainly never defend Vick for the reprehensible actions that led to him spending the last two years in prison, the man has served his debt to society. He’s earned that coveted second chance.
Which leads me to what I will defend: The Philadelphia Eagles‘ signing of Vick on Thursday evening. Just like that, an already-loaded-for-bear beast of the NFC East boasting an embarrassing wealth of athletic riches just became even wealthier.
At his best, Vick was arguably the most gifted athlete in the league. And even if two years behind bars served to diminish even some of those skills, chances are he’s still an upper echelon talent.
While Vick was away, the Dolphins introduced a little something called the “Wildcat Formation” that seems tailor-made for Vick’s skill set. Give Eagles head coach Andy Reid some time and then tell me how any defense on the planet is going to stop a package that includes burners DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin outside, and Vick, Brian Westbrook and Donovan McNabb in the backfield.
It’s not inconceivable that Vick could play a key role in what could be a hugely successful 2009 for the Eagles, which leads me to the real point of all this rambling: What would such a scenario mean for Vick’s fallen 2001 SP Authentic Rookie Card?
Once one of the most coveted singles in sports card history, Vick’s best RC was valued at $1,500 just three years ago. Today it’s checking in at $450.
Here’s betting a fantastic showing or two when Vick finally gets to play during the 2009 season will send prices flying north for the winter.
