A couple of weeks ago over on the Beckett Media Instagram page, we gave away for a box of 2014-15 Upper Deck Ice. In order to be eligible to win, participants were to like and repost the contest and tell us why they thought they should take home the box. Skye Gillespie, the young collector who was chosen at random, wasn’t exactly a hockey collector and was looking to get into the sport. In fact, he is fairly new to collecting altogether as he has only been involved in the hobby since Christmas.

Up until this point, his collecting focus has been on Shabazz Napier of the Miami Heat and Jason Motte of the Chicago Cubs. So when he pulled an Ice Premiers of Johnny Gaudreau from his box of Ice, he was none too aware of who he had just pulled. Much to his delight his followers on Instagram happily obliged in letting him know just how great of a pull the Gaudreau was, and trade offers started coming in immediately.

The rest of the box wasn’t too shabby either. He also pulled an Anze Kopitar Signature Swatches, a UD Black Henrik Lundqvist /99,  and a Boston Bruins Frozen Foursome featuring Ray Bourque, Adam Oates, Pete Peters and Glen Murray. All in all not a bad first box of hockey cards. He said that after opening the box of Ice that his interest in hockey cards has definitely been peaked, and although his focus will remain on baseball and basketball, he is looking to start trading for hockey as well.

My advice to Skye is to not only collect hockey cards & memorabilia but to also buy into collecting all 4 professional sports. This story kind of reminds me when I was younger in my teens. I pulled a Topps Patrick Roy rookie card & at that time I did not know who he was and if the card had any good value. So one day I decided to price some of my new purchased cards using Tuff Stuff price guide and when I saw how much Roy’s card was worth, my jaw dropped & I was so happy. With that said, I only paid 75 cents for the pack & pulled this card which I still proudly own. From that point on I started collecting hockey, baseball, and basketball as I was only concentrating on football which is my favorite sport. Shortly after I bought that hockey pack, I went back to pharmacy & purchased more hockey packs in which I believe they were 1986-1987 and my collection started growing. At that pharmacy, I also purchased 2 basketball packs and I pulled Michael Jordan’s 2nd yr card & I paid 75 cents per pack…I will always cherish these cards & the moment.
