Wagner

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

The hobby’s biggest card recorded another big sale this weekend.

It’s a PSA 3 copy of the 1909 T206 Honus Wagner and it was part of the annual Robert Edward Auctions sale that ended Saturday night. After 42 bids, it sold for $1.1 million and that excludes a 20-percent buyer’s premium that raised the sale to $1.32 million.

The card carries a Sweet Caporal back.

Last fall, a PSA 1 Wagner with the same back but much more damage sold for $403,664, while Goodwin & Co. sold an SGC 40 for $1.23 million on April 20, 2012.

A PSAA 5 (MC) copy of the card set the high bar recently with a $2.1 million sale in 2013.

It was I who won the card Saturday night. I am very, very thrilled to be the new owner of this priceless gem. I am lending the card to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City for a display piece they are putting together. I believe the display will be there during the summer months only.

Congratulations Roger! Awesome card. When I visit NYC this summer I will check the museum and hope they have the display.

Congrats Roger. Always nice to see that very rare items make there way to where many can enjoy. We are maybe heading to NYC to go to the American Girl store over the summer….maybe I can catch the display also. Kudos……

That is pretty cool of Roger to share it with everyone. I can’t imagine having that kind of money to spend on my favorite hobby. I owe $62000 on my mortgage and 8 years seems like forever to go before I pay that off. But very cool indeed.
