It’s been nearly a month since Beckett Grading Services launched BGS Black — a simple new label that notes perfect BGS 10 Pristine cards that have four perfect 10 subgrades with a striking black flip.

The new label has sparked a premium for sales of perfect cards, a move that BGS Director Jeromy Murray said has also prompted a number of previously graded perfect cards to be re-submitted for the new label and a number of other cards that came up just .5 short on one subgrade to be sent in for re-examination.

“[Our] feedback is that the label is demanding a premium over the standard 10s, which is good news,” Murray said.

One real-world example of this can be seen with the perfect 2014 Bowman Chrome Kris Bryant card above. It sold on eBay for $3,000. That’s more than double the amount of three previous BGS 10 copies of the same Blue Refractor have sold for on eBay. One sold for $1,406 in late-August, another sold for $1,130 in November and one went for $1,028 — also in August.

In fact, the only two similar BGS 10 Bryants to out-sell this one in recent months, according to Beckett data, were much-rarer cards — a Red Refractor auto (limited to only five copies) and a Purple Refractor auto (/10). Both of those cards — not necessarily BGS Black candidates but definitely BGS 10s — both topped $7,000 on eBay.

A number of rare and unsigned cards with the BGS Black label also have sold in recent months. A 2013 Bowman Draft Yasiel Puig — a standard card — went for $82.17, while a 2014 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout sold for $75. The same can be said for a 2014 Bowman Mookie Betts base card.

Meanwhile, asking prices are stout for more than 20 BGS Black cards on eBay — cards with asking prices everywhere from $65 for basic Bowman Rookie Cards of some players all the way up to $6,999 for rarer Refractors of players such as New York Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka.

All in all I think this is a poor idea. Granted the black label has a sweet look to it, there is already an enormous gap in value and preference between cards with a 9.5 rating and a pristine 10. The new black label will serve to drive a huge wedge between cards with only 3 tens + a 9.5 and those blessed with a black label, despite both rated as Pristine.

Brian, there is a difference between 9.5 and 10, so there should be a price difference in their value. Having a label that more clearly shows the difference is fine.

I was always under the impression that a Pristine 10 card should have all 10 sub grades not 3-10 and a 9.5. Now BGS did the right thing finally. But the question is, where does the pristine 10 with 3-10 and a 9.5 stand . To me like I said it was never a true Pristine. The black label was a cool idea.
Now the same goes for a Gem 9.5 card.
All subs 4×9.5 makes it a Gem 9.5 and deserves recognition as such. So let’s say a Red label with gold lettering should be something for Beckett to consider. There are very few 4×9.5 to be found. Also it remainds me of the credit cards, black credit cards are the thing nowadays, did Beckett follow the Banks by any chance, ha ha ha I find it amusing. In any case it’s my opinion, no offense Beckett.

I have an Albert Pujols AP Authentic Chirography with subs 10 9.5 10 10 10 with corners only 9.5, I will send this for regrading and give to my daughter for her studies and new car

I just received a perfect pristine 10 from Beckett of Pat Mahomes 2017 RC (one of five) made, to bad it wasn’t an auto card but to this day its the only Beckett Pristine (4 x 10’s) of Pat Mahomes in existence. Maybe I’ll put it on ebay for a million dollars.

I steel don’t see Becket taking action on their 4×9.5 cards. It would be cool to see that happen. To me value vise does not matter, but I do like the black label. 4×9.5 there are not many around. Recently I see on Ebay many CGC pristine and Perfect 10. Seems to me they are pushin them out like there’s no tomorow. But as you can see the value is not there compare to BGS. Any comments on what I’m saying. Thanks
