IconicPairing

 –

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

We all know Roger Maris‘ story of 61 in ’61 and we all know whose record he toppled.

Today, Topps‘ high-end Five Star brand arrived with a Relic pairing Maris and Babe Ruth — something that, believe it or not, hasn’t happened all that often in the modern era of cardboard. In fact, the players have only been paired up on 50 items in the Beckett.com database.

Want memorabilia cards? On that front there are only 30 previous cards to choose from and nearly all of them are limited to far fewer than 50 copies per card.

It’s an impressive one and it got us thinking … which duos would you like to see on a card?

Baseball – the two biggest names for the Canadian teams in the 80s – Tim Raines and George Bell
Football – Two players who excelled in the CFL – Warren Moon and Doug Flutie
Hockey – Wayne Gretzky and Dale Hawerchuk (don’t think they EVER have shared cardboard)

  2. Robert 10 December, 2014 at 22:50

    Clayton Kershaw / Sandy Koufax
    Matt Harvey / Tom Seaver
    Todd Helton / Troy Tulowitzki
Ken Griffey Jr. / Ichiro Suzuki
    Albert Pujols / Mike Trout
    Dee Gordon / Vince Coleman

A few pairings I would like to see:

    Ed Kranepool / David Wright
    Whitey Ford / Brien Taylor
    Pete Rose / Ichiro Suzuki
    Sandy Koufax / Clayton Kershaw
    Mark McGwire / Jose Canseco

    and two triples:
Kris Bryant / Javier Baez / Jorge Soler
Jason Isringhausen / Bill Pulsipher / Paul Wilson

    and this quad:
Noah Syndergaard / Matt Harvey / Jacob deGrom / Zack Wheeler

    Dick Green and Vida Blue.

All perfect game pitchers and their catchers (Larsen/Berra exists but others do not).

Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby, but on a retro Bowman or Leaf issue.

#1 wish would be for a Gary Carter / Ivan Rodriguez combo with Carter in Expos uniform and Pudge in a Nationals uniform. Aside from that I would love to see the following:
Ivan Rodriguez / Nolan Ryan (both as Texans and Astros)
Ivan Rodriguez / Randy Johnson (both as Yankees and Astros)
Gary Carter / Randy Johnson (both as Expos and Giants)
Gary Carter / Nolan Ryan (both as Mets)

Baseball: Lefty Gomez / Jimmie Foxx – A’s uni
Football: Howie Long / John Matuzak – Raiders Uni
    Baketball; Wilt / Dr J – 76ers uni
Hockey: Bobby Clarke / Bobby Orr – Flyers & Bruins uni
Multi-Sport Quad: Babe Ruth – Howie Long – Wilt – Bobby Orr

All need to be cut or on card auto’s with a GU patch containing lettering/emblem….card needs to be 1952 or 1970 Topps style

baseball Larry Doby and jackie Robinson
Football Gales Sayers and Brian Piccolo
    Hockey Vezina and Richard

  9. Robert Braxton 12 December, 2014 at 01:26

Fred Lynn & Ichiro (only two to win MVP and ROY in same year)
Bert Blyleven & Tim Lincecum (careers are looking similar, statistically)
George Foster & Jose Bautista (careers are looking similar, statistically)
    Jim Sundberg & Ivan Rodriguez
    Rafael Palmeiro & Will Clark

(obviously I’m interpreting ‘Legends’ very loosely; I didn’t put a lot of thought into this list.)

    It depends.
For base cards, I’ve seen most of them, and there are some good ideas already listed.
Make it a cut signature group and it gets better.
But for the new “memorabilia” cards with COAs that promise nothing, I’ll pass, thanks.
Bat cards that basically state that its a piece of wood somehow vaguely related to the game
and we are supposed to assume that its related to player shown, just make me angry, especially
when it turns out to be a stadium seat of some such.
