August 12, 2017 — save the date. Topps, MLB and the MLBPA are bringing back National Baseball Card Day for the second consecutive year. And while the overall draw remains the same — free baseball cards — pieces are evolving to make 2017 National Baseball Card Day bigger and better for both collectors and participating shops.

17_National Baseball Card_7x10.indd

The 2017 Topps National Baseball Card Day set has 29 cards. It’s one for every MLB team except the Los Angeles Angels. But they’re not left out. An exclusive Mike Trout card is available to customers who make a $10 purchase in shops. This is similar to a Kris Bryant card in the 2016 set.

Participating hobby shops will be handing out free packs of cards, each with six cards.

Randomly inserted hits like autographs will be included as well. Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa and Andrew Benintendi are among the signatures that can be found.

2017 Topps National Baseball Card Day Stadium Giveaway Sets

Topps, MLB and MLBPA are doing several things to promote 2017 National Baseball Card Day. In the weeks leading up to August 12 (and a couple immediately after), every MLB stadium will be distributing packs at games. These packs have team-specific cards different from the national set.

On August 11, players will be getting involved by opening packs on social media including their personal accounts. Like last year, they will also be handing out packs to fans at stadiums.

Contests are also part of the plans. As part of their promotion package, shops will have prizes for a handful of people. Topps will also randomly select five shops to give out larger national prizes.

Online retailer Blowout Cards is helping promote the event and encouraging collectors to go to hobby shops by closing their website on National Baseball Card Day. They will also have banners in their forums and mentions in newsletters.

Huh, no Bellinger? That seems odd.

Makes me wish I had a card shop within 100 miles of where I live.

One interesting note. Card shop owners had to purchase these packs this year. I believe my LCS owner had a 2-case allotment and they were 50 cents a pack. I don’t know why, but I surmise this measure is to curb LCS owners from hoarding the packs for themselves and not hand them out.

I disagree Jonathan. If they have to pay, wouldn’t they be more likely to open them since they are invested, rather than give them away free? I hope they truly do give them out free.

@John — They will likely be listed online by Sunday. The base cards aren’t intended to be rare.

  10. Posted August 11, 2017 at 10:33 am | Permalink

Everyone might want to contact their local card shop or stop in because some of them aren’t included on the list

@John- We will be sending out the packs with every Topps order from our website once Saturday is over. While supplies last. Just click my name and you’ll be taken to our website!

Great response to National Baseball Card Day. We gave away nearly 200 FREE Packs to people who walked in our doors on Saturday (limit one pack per person per day) with an additional FREE Pack for every Topps Product box bought. We still have another 100 Packs which we will give away on Monday.

We saw families, new collectors and many people who just love baseball. Great Fun!

Just received the 30 card set in the mail today – crazy to think that Judge and Bellinger are driving the hobby and ridiculous wax prices in 2017 and are missing from the 2017 NTCD set!

You’ll likely have to find them on eBay or for sale from a local dealer.
