2017 Topps MLS Soccer Header

By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor

2017 Topps MLS Soccer is mostly new — new design, first cards for new teams and the checklist has the first MLS cards of new players. And then 1987 Topps Baseball came along.

Each 2017 Topps MLS Soccer hobby box has a pair of autographs and one memorabilia card.

Base Set

As has been the case since Topps acquired the MLS license, the flagship set’s base design differs from the one used for Topps Baseball. It has a lot of white space with all but the player photo getting a faded treatment. It also has the first cards from the new Minnesota United FC and Atlanta United FC franchises. All told, the 2017 Topps MLS base set has 190 cards.

Parallels come in a few different colors, all of which are serial numbered: Blue, Orange (/25) and Black (1/1).

Select players also have short print variations with different images.

Autographs and Memorabilia Cards

2017 Topps MLS autographs fall under a couple of categories. Base Autographs are the most common. These use the same general design as the main set. Orange, Red (/10) and Black (1/1) parallels are all included. The regular versions are also numbered, although to varying amounts.

Faces of the Franchise Autographs are new. The top player from each team — at least those with an autograph deal with the card maker — is featured. Parallels here are limited to just Red (/10) and Black (1/1).

Also new are Museum Collection MLS Autograph Relics. These numbered cards are based on the Museum Collection Baseball design and come with a pair of jersey swatches alongside the signature.

Each hobby box also comes with one Jumbo Relic. These have larger-then-average swatches and come with multiple levels of parallels. Some of these have multi-color and patch swatches.

Other memorabilia cards are also randomly inserted. These may have a sense of familiarity as they’re based on other Topps products. What sets those are, exactly, have yet to be revealed.

Inserts

Although it’s not a relic, one old-school set that is featured is 1987 Topps Baseball. Thirty years after its initial release, the woodgrain design is being resurrected once again for the Throwback Topps insert set. Signed versions are also randomly inserted.

Other inserts spotlight top offensive players. Back of the Net centers on the leagues top goal scorers. Give and Go cards have two players each, the top player combos from each franchise.

I have no idea as to why Topps thinks soccer fans would be nostalgic for a baseball card design. When they used the UK borders for the retro cards (1976 and 1977) I figure collectors would have been more excited. I know that I was.

But, I like MLS and I know I will buy those on the secondary market. The base set looks really nice with that simple design.

I wish they would release full sets in the retro styles,i don’t like the cards that are full of special effects, simple well taken photo & old fashioned design is all I want to buy.Good to see though some are being released in throwback style.Wish they would do the same for the EPL cards as Match ATTAX are terrible

See I don’t care for the base design being so plain. I prefer the special effects one like topps fire. Faces of the franchise and the relics look nice, but I am tired of Throwback designs.
