As the world prepared to descend on Rio for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Topps is highlighted many of the top Americans hoping to bring home the gold. 2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls trading cards spotlight many of the athletes that are already household names in America as well as some who will likely emerge as heroes.

2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls Autograph Relic

The overall structure of the product is similar to the past couple of Topps Olympic products from 2014 and 2012. Hobby boxes come with an autograph, a relic and a manufactured relic.

Base Set

2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls Base

The 2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls base set isn’t big. Chiming in at 75 cards, it features current athletes from a variety of sports. It’s also not very large.

Every pack comes with a Bronze parallel. Most have either a Silver (1:2 packs) or Gold (1:3) as well. Gold Rainbow parallels are all one-of-ones.

Inserts

Collectors can find a couple of different basic insert sets in 2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls. Olympic Disciplines (1:4) act as a primer for the featured sports. Not only do they include an athlete, but there’s an overview of how the competition is played as well.

Finally, there’s Closing Ceremonies. At 1:24 packs, it’s the toughest of the basic inserts. More than just a showcase of past ceremonies, the cards also highlight medal totals and more.

Autographs and Relic Cards

Signed cards come in a couple of different themes. Base Autographs maintain the general look of the base set. More than 30 athletes have their signatures in the set, although it looks as though they’re on stickers. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Rainbow (1/1) parallels are all serial numbered.

US Olympic Champion Autographs spotlight athletes who have already had medals hung around their necks. The hobby-exclusive insert has a much smaller checklist with fewer than a dozen cards. US Olympic Champion Autographs have Red, Gold and Gold Rainbow (1/1) parallels.

A small number of Cut Signatures have been included in 2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls. All one-of-ones, each has an autograph from an all-time Olympic great.

US Olympic Team Relics are the games’ equivalent to a jersey card. The large checklist has just over 30 athletes plus numbered Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Rainbow (1/1) parallels. Select athletes also have autographed relics.

2016 Topps US Olympic and Paralympic Team Hopefuls has three different types of manufactured patch cards: US Olympic Team Patch, US Olympic Team Crest Patch and American Flag. All three have Red and Gold parallels with low numbering.

    And sticker autos again.
Sometimes they do it right. The Olympic Champions subsets of 2012 and 2014 were on card and great.
It looks like one of the subsets might be on card again. If so,I will likely collect it, otherwise no.

I’m sorry, nothing could make me pay for a single card of someone “hopeful” of going to any sort of Olympics. Sets that come out after all the versions of the Olympics are complete, now that’s something I’m likely to buy. This is like buying cards of players at open tryouts for your local professional sports team. They are “hopeful,” but we don’t know if they’ll make it.

There really is leetle reason to buy this product at time of release. Previous releases can now be found for under $30 a hobby box. Also more than turned off by Topps’ insistence that a manufactured patch card is any kind of “HIT”.

  4. Cameron365 8 July, 2016 at 08:42

Was looking forward to this… Now not so much only 1 diving card and sticker autographed? Was looking forward to getting this set what a LETDOWN

  5. Todd 24 July, 2016 at 08:18

This product is awesome. Those of you that aren’t opening it simply because of sticker autographs are missing the boat. These boxes are loaded with value. Box says 1 autograph, 1 relic and 1 commemorative relic per box, but our 26 boxes delivered at least 4 hits in every box with 5 and sometimes 6 hits in other boxes.

No female divers ? do USA not have female divers ?
otherwise, much better than 4 years ago , less male nudity and the inclusion of Diana Taurasi who was overlooked before.

Leave it up to Topps to screw up a great product from there initial release in 2012. I was really looking forward to buying at least a case of this product. But it turns out to be a bust. They changed the Ginter artistic look, back to generic snap shots of the same old Olympians from 2012. Barley any Track & Field Athlete’s, no new swimming, diving, or wrestling. I think there’s maybe 1 greatest athlete throwback, No Decathlete come on!! This product for a high end collector like myself is a complete waste of money and loss. Take my advice don’t buy any of this product, unless they come out with a series 2 which probably won’t happen.
