The 2016 Topps Rocky 40th Anniversary Complete rights something of a hobby injustice. Despite being one of the most popular movie franchises of all-time, especially when it comes to sports films, just two of the entries have full-fledged card sets. There have been a couple of off-shoots since then, but nothing comprehensive.

2016 Topps Rocky 40th Anniversary Base Rocky

This factory set, an online-exclusive on the Topps website, is the closest thing we’ve got so far.

Done in the style of 1979 Topps Rocky II, the checklist covers all of the original films from Rocky through Rocky Balboa. And we’re not talking a couple of highlights for each. The checklist features 330 cards, which averages out to more than 50 cards per movie. That said, it varies from film to film. The original Rocky and Rocky V have 31 cards each. Others go up from there.

2016 Topps Rocky 40th Anniversary Base Rocky IV

Also randomly inserted in select sets are Sylvester Stallone autographs. These are extremely limited, landing 1:125 sets. They come with a few different versions, each with a different image and numbered to 10.

The direct cost of the 2016 Topps Rocky 40th Anniversary Complete Set is $59.99.

Topps has been fairly active with the Rocky license over the past couple of years. They included a handful of base cards and autographs of key characters in 2015 Topps Allen & Ginter. Earlier this year, Topps released some limited edition 40th Anniversary prints on their website. They also did a ten-card preview set of sorts for the 2016 National Sports Collectors Convention inspired by 1976 Topps Baseball. Finally, some Sylvester Stallone autographs with a picture of Rocky Balboa were a part of the recently released 2016 Topps The Mint Baseball.

An anthology set was planned about a decade ago around the time Rocky Balboa was released. But that set never came to be.

Based on the fact that there are four different autographs in the product, each numbered to 10 and inserted at a rate of 1:125 sets, the print run looks to be around 5,000 sets.

Not bad. I was hoping for a direct release with autographs at a reasonable price, but silly me, I’ve not been paying enough attention given the Topps Now prices for autos/memorabilia.

The price for a base set is not too far out of line depending on the odds of getting an autograph.

  2. Card Opinionator 31 August, 2016 at 00:18

The auto odds are slim and none. And someone else just got the slim. $60 for a set, no inserts, and slim odds? When did this hobby become such suckers?

Funny as heck. I see people trying to get $100+ on Ebay for the sets when you can literally by thousands of them still on Topps.
The set “is” popular having sold thousands. I’ve yet to see the Rocky Auto cards from it available yet, though I have seen singles broken out in weird amounts.

I just got the Rocky card set for my birthday and to my surprise received a Sylvester Stallone Autographed card. It is #4 of 10!!!!

    Curtis,
How was the card packaged? Inserted in-between the regular cards? In a sleeve? Lose on top?
