1967 Topps Stand-Ups Discs Header

2016 Topps Heritage Baseball is all about retro-fitting 1967. Part of that is a couple of retail-exclusive inserts that shed light on a couple of test issues from that year that were never officially released. 1967 Topps Discs and 1968 Topps Giant Stand-Ups were both in the works some 50 years ago but never got their turn in any major capacity.

And while the new inserts focus on current players, it’s also a perfect reason to look back on their vintage origins.

If you were confused as to why the Walmart-exclusive 2016 Topps Heritage 1967 Discs inserts weren’t actually discs, there’s a reason for it. The originals never made it past the production phase.

While some 1967 Topps Discs are out there, they come from sheets and the production line. It’s believed that they were intended to be made into buttons. They were printed on foil, something that wasn’t common back then. Discs are also small in size, measuring 2 1/4″ in diameter.

A total of 24 players were slated for the set including Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente.

In 2004, an uncut sheet of 1967 Topps Discs was sold by Robert Edward Auctions for $13,800. The initial estimate at the time was $2,000 to $3,000.

1968 Topps Giant Stand-Ups Baseball

The idea behind 1968 Topps Giant Stand-Ups Baseball was that you could punch out the perforated lines, fold it appropriately and have a display on your desk, dresser or whatever — of the baseball player’s head. Pop-up cards are somewhat common. Usually, though, it’s the entire body of the character so they can, well, stand up.

Like the 1967 Topps Discs, these were never officially released although a very small number have made their way into collections over the years.

1968 Topps Giant Stand-Ups come in two forms. Thin stock are the more common of the two. These do not have any die-cutting around the edges and may have originated from uncut sheets. However, completed thick stock versions also exist. These are die-cut and even harder to find.

The checklist has 24 players including Mantle, Mays, Clemente and Pete Rose.

This set is commonly referred to as a 1967 set. However, Jim “Catfish” Hunter is a giveaway they were in fact intended for release a year later. The front clearly lists him as a member of the Oakland A’s. The A’s didn’t move to California until 1968.

The 2016 Topps Heritage Stand-Ups inserts based on these are only available Target packs.
