Randy Johnson SuperCollector adds a more personal item to his stash at the National

SuperCollectorRandyweb

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Rod Lawrence is a serious collector of The Big Unit and at the recent National Sports Collectors Convention he added perhaps his biggest piece of personal memorabilia of them all.

He got Randy Johnson to sign Page 32 of the July issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly.

Why? That’s the spot where Lawrence was picked as a SuperCollector.

“I wanted to let you know that I met Randy Johnson today at the National Card Show in Cleveland and had him sign the Beckett article,” Lawrence wrote in an email. “I thought you’d like to see the pictures … This was awesome and very special. Thank you very much.”

On the page in the issue, which has been authenticated with a TRISTAR sticker, Johnson wrote “To Rod, My SuperCollector. Best Wishes, Randy Johnson.”

In all, Lawrence owns more than 7,700 Johnson cards including more than 3,900 unique cards and more than 700 memorabilia cards of the future Hall of Famer.

While we showcase a SuperCollector nearly every month in BSCM, our annual SuperCollector showcase is coming up later this year.

How can you be showcased in the issue for your collection of any kind or sport? See below.

Flawless Bird

By Stephen Laroche | Beckett Basketball Editor

For decades, collectors have been hunting tirelessly for the perfect card. The quest has taken them from cigarette packs to wax packs and from convenience stores to card stores and, in time, the online marketplace.

The quest has been a long a challenging one, but last year, Panini America did their best to make it an easier one with the release of their landmark basketball card product, Flawless.

Back for another year, 2013-14 Panini Flawless will once again offer up 10 cards per pack and the results are expected to be jaw-dropping once again – and so, of course, is the price they are expected to sell for. Each pack is actually a small padded briefcase that will contain six autographed cards, two Jumbo Prime memorabilia cards and two Jewel base cards. Every single card is numbered to 25 or less and they are expected to be chased heavily. Read More »

This year, dealers wanting to get in on the Overtime action can do so by ordering boxes of 2014-15 NHL Artifacts, 2014-15 Upper Deck Series One or 2014-15 Black Diamond from either Universal Distribution in Canada or GTS Distribution in the United States. Panini Adds Tough Signers To Late-Season NBA Lineup

Anthony

By Stephen Laroche | Beckett Basketball Editor

Trading card companies are always looking for a way to out-do themselves with each passing release and one tried-and-true method to capture the interest of hardcore collectors is to obtain autographs from the toughest of signers.

Panini America has definitely raised some eyebrows with some of their most recent signees as many of them have not had cards bearing their autograph appear in products for several years. The company recently announced that current stars Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Manu Ginobili will all have hard-signed cards in late season releases such as 2013-14 Immaculate, 2013-14 National Treasures and 2013-14 Flawless. Wade and Ginobili are actually signing physical cards for the first time with the company and Anthony will be doing so for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Panini America and Broadway Joe create a memory-making experience

Namath

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor | Commentary

CLEVELAND | I went to the National Sports Collectors Convention seeking something memorable, but what I got on Saturday night was priceless.

It was better then any autographed photo from any guest in attendance at the Panini America VIP Party. It wasn’t anything found in a coveted two-card NSCC promo pack being shredded en masse by those in attendance inside the home of the Cleveland Browns hoping for something rare, something pricey.

What I got was a moment I’ll never forget — and a moment where, honestly, I can’t even remember all the details. It was a whirlwind of emotion, surprise and the surreal.

Joe Namath handed me his Super Bowl ring.

Old cards help create Exquisite Lebron tribute at National Sports Collectors Convention

cardart2

By Ben Aguirre | Contributing Writer

CLEVELAND | When one thinks of the most-iconic basketball card of the last decade, there is likely one that comes to mind — the 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James, an autographed patch Rookie Card.  Only 99 copies exist, but with the help of Tim Carroll, an elementary school teacher from South Carolina, there soon will be a 100th of sorts.

Carroll, the man who famously cut up 1989 Upper Deck baseball cards to create a giant tribute of the famed Ken Griffey Jr. RC, has been at the National Sports Collectors Convention this week making his latest creation, his version of the famed James card.

“I’m using nothing but Upper Deck brand Cleveland Cavaliers cards to recreate the modern Holy Grail of basketball cards,” Carroll said as he held a glue stick in one hand preparing to place a shiny piece of 1995-96 SP card into the area that surrounds the head of James on his creation.
