Where is it now: The infamous Evan Mathis Twitter hoax receipt

Kirk Keith is a serious Alabama football collector, and he’s got a legendary piece of new Crimson Tide memorabilia that’s not so serious — but still pretty cool.

MathisIn June, Philadelphia Eagles lineman — and serious sports card collector Evan Mathis pulled off a pretty impressive Twitter hoax that some in the national media latched onto and ran with as an example of an apparent plight faced by NFL rookies. Keith now owns the piece of memorabilia that was the key to it all, complete with the autograph of the Alabama alum.

Beckett Media’s Chris Olds caught up with him at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland to talk about the infamous dinner receipt that tore up Twitter faster than a hungry guard at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse.

Check out the video above, and then we’ll ask the $64,000 question … what’s it worth?

Panini Adds Tough Signers To Late-Season NBA Lineup

Anthony

By Stephen Laroche | Beckett Basketball Editor

Trading card companies are always looking for a way to out-do themselves with each passing release and one tried-and-true method to capture the interest of hardcore collectors is to obtain autographs from the toughest of signers.

Panini America has definitely raised some eyebrows with some of their most recent signees as many of them have not had cards bearing their autograph appear in products for several years. The company recently announced that current stars Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Manu Ginobili will all have hard-signed cards in late season releases such as 2013-14 Immaculate, 2013-14 National Treasures and 2013-14 Flawless. Wade and Ginobili are actually signing physical cards for the first time with the company and Anthony will be doing so for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Panini America and Broadway Joe create a memory-making experience

Namath

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor | Commentary

CLEVELAND | I went to the National Sports Collectors Convention seeking something memorable, but what I got on Saturday night was priceless.

It was better then any autographed photo from any guest in attendance at the Panini America VIP Party. It wasn’t anything found in a coveted two-card NSCC promo pack being shredded en masse by those in attendance inside the home of the Cleveland Browns hoping for something rare, something pricey.

What I got was a moment I’ll never forget — and a moment where, honestly, I can’t even remember all the details. It was a whirlwind of emotion, surprise and the surreal.

Joe Namath handed me his Super Bowl ring.

Old cards help create Exquisite Lebron tribute at National Sports Collectors Convention

cardart2

By Ben Aguirre | Contributing Writer

CLEVELAND | When one thinks of the most-iconic basketball card of the last decade, there is likely one that comes to mind — the 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James, an autographed patch Rookie Card.  Only 99 copies exist, but with the help of Tim Carroll, an elementary school teacher from South Carolina, there soon will be a 100th of sorts.

Carroll, the man who famously cut up 1989 Upper Deck baseball cards to create a giant tribute of the famed Ken Griffey Jr. RC, has been at the National Sports Collectors Convention this week making his latest creation, his version of the famed James card.

“I’m using nothing but Upper Deck brand Cleveland Cavaliers cards to recreate the modern Holy Grail of basketball cards,” Carroll said as he held a glue stick in one hand preparing to place a shiny piece of 1995-96 SP card into the area that surrounds the head of James on his creation.

On the breaker beat at the NSCC — five basics we should know

IMG_2322

By Ben Aguirre | Contributing Writer | Commentary

CLEVELAND | The pointed end of a box-cutter slices through the packing tape on a case of 2014 Bowman Platinum.  The master box is turned upside down and out tumble 12 brand-new sealed boxes of the latest baseball product to hit the shelves.

The hands that will be handling these cards for the first time are held in front of a camera and, pack after pack, the contents of each wrapper are revealed — the names of some of the players celebrated, others merely mentioned.  The shiniest cards are often held in front of the lens for extended periods to show the people in audience in person, and those watching around the world, what has just been pulled.

The idea of the live case and box break is one that has been around for years. For at least a decade, collectors have filmed themselves opening their boxes to document their pulls. But in recent years the notion of box and case breaks has skyrocketed across the web and new breakers are popping up everywhere.
