Distributor Sports Images discontinues sports card portion of business

After more than two decades as a distributor of sports cards, Woburn, Mass.-based distributor Sports Images is getting out of the game.

The company will continue to sell sports memorabilia to hobby shops and other companies, just not sports cards. Its accounts will now be handled by GTS Distribution, according to an email sent by Sports Images President Matt Lane on Monday.

Lane cited expanding opportunities in the other areas.

“Sports Images has transitioned the hobby trading card segment of their business to GTS Distribution,” he wrote. “After 25 years in the hobby trading card industry, we have decided to focus our efforts on our retail, novelty, memorabilia and other aspects of our business. As these opportunities continue to expand, the demand for more resources, time and attention also increases and a choice was inevitable.”

He also cited GTS’ long-running efforts in the industry as to why Sports Images selected the company for the change.

“We have chosen to transition our hobby business to GTS Distribution because of their excellent reputation and longevity in the hobby industry,” he wrote. “Starting this week, all Sports Images hobby customers will transition to GTS. All hobby backorders in the Sports Images system will transfer to GTS automatically. This transition will be smooth as the trading card manufacturers, GTS and Sports Images are working together. Our cumulative goal will be to have no delays, changes or confusion.”

Lane has been president of Sports Images for more than 18 years, and the company sells more than 12,000 products for college and pro sports from more than 150 vendors.

“Transition will be as smooth as the trading card manufacturers” . That means this is going to be a disaster. They might as well start sending out redemptions too
