Topps’ latest wall art series takes a look back at vintage MLB logos

ASTROS

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Topps is turning back the clock to 1959 with its latest offering of limited-edition art prints.

The Topps Throwback Team Logo Collection will showcase logos from a selection of teams in the 1950s and 1960s on a familiar 1959-style card frame — but this time they aren’t cards. They are the company’s newest wall art line.

Set to launch on Topps.com on Thursday (May 1), the collection will include the logos for 20 MLB teams.

Your Turn: After nearly 30 years of Beckett Baseball, what’s your best memory of Beckett?

BB1

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Thirty years ago this November, it all began.

While the seeds of Beckett Media reach back another five years with Statabase in 1979, Dr. James Beckett’s first issue of Beckett Monthly Baseball Price Guide, which is now Beckett Baseball, helped change the collecting landscape, helping bring order to the chaos of collecting what was, back then, a still relatively simple thing.

Baseball cards.

As part of the 30th anniversary, we want to know one thing from our readers today as well as the past.

Q: What’s your best memory of Beckett?

Please include your name with your response — and you might see it in a future issue.

Panini America‘s Golden Age brand of retro-styled baseball cards with a smattering of pop culture is returning for a third year, the company announced on Monday, as it revealed the basic information and preview images for the product.

Set to arrive in June with one autograph and one memorabilia card per hobby box, Golden Age will include the tobacco-size minis and parallels that fans have come to expect but with some new twists. Card gallery: 2014 Bowman baseball cards

Appelink

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

This year’s first installment of the Bowman franchise from Topps arrives on Wednesday in 2014 Bowman, and it will pack the first MLB-licensed cards and autographs from some of the top prospects and rookies in the game.

One example? Jose Abreu‘s first MLB-approved autographs. Another? The first MLB autos of the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, Mark Appel. Then, of course, there’s the latest for Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.

After the jump is a sampling of the autographs, inserts, parallels and more that you’ll find in Bowman this year. It’s one that marks the return of the First Bowman Card notation as well as one that carries a new logo for the brand, which is in its 25th consecutive year of release — an anniversary marked in the product with 1989 Bowman-inspired inserts.

Your Turn (Beckett Baseball No. 100) — Who has impressed you the most in MLB this season?

McHugh

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

As the first month of the MLB season comes to an end, we’re curious about who has captured your attention and who has captured your cardboard dollars.

Perhaps it’s the resurgence of Albert Pujols, who finally appears primed to recapture his past magic but this time on the West Coast. Maybe it’s that newcomer Jose Abreu everybody seems to be talking about. Or the Cardinals’ 5-1 ace Adam Wainwright … or Charlie Blackmon, who seems to be putting on a hitting show in Colorado.

Or, maybe it’s 27-year-old pitcher Collin McHugh who picked up the first two wins of his big-league career this past week or so with 19 strikeouts, three walks and just one earned run in 15 innings of work as his Houston Astros knocked off Seattle and Oakland. (He has autographs in just four Panini America brands from last year.)

For the next issue of Beckett Baseball, we simply want to know … Who has impressed you the most in MLB this season?

Tell us in the comments below. We’ll run a selection of your answers in the next issue.

Hot starts: Who are you buying? (Pick your top five … )

Beckett 20 questions on … Jose Abreu and other Major League Baseball stars from Cuba

1Abreu

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Jose Abreu just might be this year’s Yasiel Puig when it comes to cardboard.

Or, do we ask … is he better?

The Chicago White Sox slugger’s first month in Major League Baseball isn’t even over and he’s already staked a claim to a pair of rookie records. His 10 home runs lead MLB and is the best mark for a rookie for the month. His 31-RBI total, which he reached on Sunday, topped the rookie mark set by a past hobby power, Albert Pujols, in 2001.

Puig, of course, set the hobby ablaze with the Dodgers last year in his first season since leaving Cuba and Abreu is just the latest star from the baseball-focused country.

What do you think of Abreu’s hot start? How well do you know your Cuban baseball? Let us know in the comments below and take a look at our latest installment of 20 Questions.

1. How would you grade Jose Abreu's first month in MLB?

New Orleans’ Anthony Davis becoming one of the hobby’s top stars

By Dan Good | Contributing Writer

When Anthony Davis is playing, you can’t look away.

His facial hair draws you in first, the most famous unibrow since Bert of “Sesame Street” fame.

You keep watching because of his talent, a unique blend of tough interior play with a shooter’s finesse. He carries a bit of Dirk Nowitzki’s court presence.

Like his unibrow, Davis – a power forward and center for the New Orleans Pelicans – is unique. And like his unibrow, Davis is growing into his own, realizing his blue-chip potential in his second NBA season. Davis led the league in blocks per game in 2013-14, the

youngest player to do so since they started keeping track in the 1970s. He also finished among the leaders in double-doubles, points and rebounds.

Love of 1980s humor generates new card ideas for artist Joe Simko

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Poking fun at things can be enjoyable. Wacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids have been doing it for decades, and Wax Eye has joined in the mix.

The illustration card company is bringing its next release to the market with the handy work of Joe Simko, co-owner and Chief Creative Officer. This time the fun will be had with comic book characters in Stupid Heroes.

“Super hero comics aren’t just for the comic readers now, it’s for the mass populations,” Simko said. “Stupid Heroes is a reaction to all these super hero movies. Comics like the Watchmen portrayed them more-human. Pixar’s Incredibles portrayed the characters more like normal, family members. Our Stupid Heroes highlights even more of their human characteristics. What’s more human than being known for your biggest “flaw”? Example Stupid Heroes characters: Captain Allergy or The Red Zit.”
