Upper Deck’s Diamond Dealer meeting revealed more about the company’s upcoming products.
Upper Deck’s Grant Sandground, director of product development, discussed the 2014-15 hockey season, upcoming basketball and a massive Master Collection set coming while at the 2014 Industry Summit.
The All-Time Great Master Collection will feature 30 great athletes. Each box will come with one autograph from all 30 athletes, a Michael Jordan multi-diamond card, hand-painted cards, metal patch cards and a dual signed card.
Another bonus item could be an autographed buyback, a championship ring, full game-worn jersey or equipment, historical sports relics or even a Michael Jordan Motorsports motorcycle (this would be a redemption).

Checklists can be a hot topic. Some collectors clamor for them, others are more nonchalant about the whole thing.
But one thing they have all noticed is how checklists don’t seem to come out until at least release day. It’s rare that a final checklist is released early, but a lot of that has to do with getting autographs back from athletes and finalizing paperwork and information from printers.
Collectors had a discussion about checklists on Twitter on Thursday night. See their reactions and what group late checklists seems to affect most.

LAS VEGAS – When it comes to checklists, one question always comes up – why can’t we get them sooner?
This was one of the hot topics during a manufacturer panel that featured representative from Topps, Upper Deck and Panini America at the 2014 Industry Summit in Las Vegas.
Collectors and dealers may not like the answer. It seems the earliest companies can get a final checklist is the day of pack out because the biggest hurdle is the autographs.

One of the more unusual test-issue sets of the 1960s is coming back next week as wall art.
Topps is launching a series of 20 11×17 “For Mayor” prints featuring 20 Hall of Fame players on Topps.com (direct link) on Tuesday at noon Eastern. The prints are reminiscent of the 1967 Topps Stickers with a political aesthetic backing the legendary players.
Each piece, which will be printed on Heritage-style stock, will be limited to just 99 numbered copies. They will cost $49.99.

LAS VEGAS – With Panini’s Tuesday announcement revolving around its new rewards program, some of the other tidbits from its 2014 Industry Summit corporate address could have been missed.
Panini started by admitting 2013 was a mixed year for the company, plenty of which had to do with football. Football is a rookie-driven sport and the tail of the 2012 season (which comes out in 2013) did well while a weaker 2013 rookie class didn’t drive sales.
However, Panini expects that to turn around with a 2014 football class that features Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Jadeveon Clowney and others.
Basketball: By having an exclusive with basketball, it allows Panini to create specific types of memorabilia cards such as the Christmas Day game-used shorts cards that will appear in Immaculate and National Treasures Basketball. These cards feature unique patches that Panini will utilize in those brands.

LAS VEGAS – When Panini America announced its new reward system for redemptions on Tuesday, collectors immediately had a list of questions.
Panini has created the system to replace player-specific redemptions (read more). Beckett Media spoke with Panini CEO Mark Warsop following the announcement with many questions that collectors submitted through Twitter to Beckett Editor Susan Lulgjuraj.
Q. Will the Reward system replace all the hits in a product?
A. No, only when a card that was planned into a program that would have ordinarily been a redemption will be a Panini Rewards card, unless we are running a specific promotion and we want to add rewards just to reward the consumer.
All the regular hits will be in the program. It just replaces the redemption.

LAS VEGAS – One year ago today, Upper Deck announced that it had acquired an MLB Players Association license.
But in the last year, collectors have not seen a single baseball product from the company.
“We put together a couple of products last year, including Fleer Retro, and we weren’t happy with how they came out,” Upper Deck President Jason Masherah told Beckett Media. “Basically, we scrapped them and started over.”

LAS VEGAS – Panini America is upping its digital game.
It introduced Panini Rewards and a patch database at the 2014 Industry Summit on Tuesday.
The biggest element from Panini Rewards is that Panini is eliminating player-specific redemptions. Collectors will instead get a card with a point value where collectors can then go on the Panini site or app to redeem the points for cards available.
The program will begin May and be available on smartphones (IOS and Android) and on its website.

LAS VEGAS – Redemptions, more redemptions and a couple of new, but old products.
Those were the topics of Topps’ corporate address at the 2014 Industry Summit on Monday.
Topps executives are aware of the problems with redemptions: too many of them, many take too long to be fulfilled – if they even are – and not enough updates.
Topps discussed some of the changes it has made to the redemption system meant to get cards into the hands of collectors sooner, including eliminating unreliable signers and finding better moments to pursue autographs.
