New Upper Deck Master Collection set puts together 30 great athletes

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Upper Deck’s Diamond Dealer meeting revealed more about the company’s upcoming products.

Upper Deck’s Grant Sandground, director of product development, discussed the 2014-15 hockey season, upcoming basketball and a massive Master Collection set coming while at the 2014 Industry Summit.

The All-Time Great Master Collection will feature 30 great athletes. Each box will come with one autograph from all 30 athletes, a Michael Jordan multi-diamond card, hand-painted cards, metal patch cards and a dual signed card.

Another bonus item could be an autographed buyback, a championship ring, full game-worn jersey or equipment, historical sports relics or even a Michael Jordan Motorsports motorcycle (this would be a redemption).

Just 200 boxes will be made. Players in the set include Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Don Mattingly, Tony Hawk, Oscar de le Hoya and more. See below for a full list of all 30 players.

Football

Upper Deck has created general college products and basketball sets related to major schools. Now, UD is going after the SEC in football.

In August, 2014 Upper Deck SEC Football will be released. The checklist will include players such as Peyton Manning and Joe Namath. But there will also be a focus on newcomers – 43 2014 NFL rookies will be featured in the set including Johnny Manziel.

There will be three hits per box including Light FX Signatures.

Hockey

The NHL 2014-15 schedule will start with MVP in August, which will product 99-cent packs.

O-Pee-Chee and Fleer Ultra in September, Artifacts in October and Upper Deck Series will follow it in November.

I’m surprised they used Alex Morgan instead of Mia Hamm.

Nothing says All Time Greats like Danica Patrick. Is GoDaddy paying to have her in the set? LMAO

With all due respect, they can do better than this for several reasons.

Several of these “greats” have done nothing as yet.
Others have done things at the college/amateur level only.
McGwire and Clemens have the unfortunate taint of the Steroid era to deal with.

And how you have have an all time greats without Muhammad Ali or Pele or Annika Sorenstam?
I realize that it may be too expensive or some of them are under exclusive contracts, for now, but
I’d suggest they try and find a way or simply skip that sport all together without pretending that the
player they use instead is the greatest. I think Ali might be available again, I don’t know about Pele.

Or, they could do a subset such as greatest of a generation instead, bypassing the era of the players
they can’t get, but without pretending the person they have signing is truly the greatest.

The other problem will be the costs of the sets.
I know I can’t afford the $7K that will likely be asked.
Given than most of the players are available for under $100 on the secondary market. *shrug*

No doubt the hype behind it will drive the price of the keys up to help balance it, with the chance
at the mystery items driving it. Personally, I’d not want MJ’s Motorcycle, lets not pretend that’s what
he is famous for.

I’m not really sure why they put Danica in the set as I do not think she is truly a great yet. Yes she has done things that no other women in motorsports has done yet, but I do not think she should be considered a legend yet though. In Indy cars, out of the 115 she was in, she only has 1 win and 7 podium finishes. Taking that to an average, she was on the podium once in every 16-17 races. In NASCAR, out of the 51 races she was in so far, she only has 1 top 10 finish. In the Nationwide series though, she had only 7 top 10 finishes out of the 61 races she was in. I honestly think that UD should have used someone like AJ Foyt ,Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, etc. That is just my opinion, but I do not think she should be considered a legend just yet!
