Card Chat: Collectors talk about checklists and buying habits

Checklists can be a hot topic. Some collectors clamor for them, others are more nonchalant about the whole thing.

But one thing they have all noticed is how checklists don’t seem to come out until at least release day. It’s rare that a final checklist is released early, but a lot of that has to do with getting autographs back from athletes and finalizing paperwork and information from printers.

Collectors had a discussion about checklists on Twitter on Thursday night. See their reactions and what group late checklists seems to affect most.

I would rather a last minute announcement of final checklist if it meant have zero redemptions

For the general public, collectors like to know who the possible hits are and what are the short prints. But on a scale of 1 to 10, it is not too important. Today, collectors make their decision whether to invest in a few boxes by viewing case breaks in the internet. Too many times, I have had customers tell me, “I’m not going to buy that product. I saw a case break. It’s too hard to get a good hit.”

As a card shop owner, I am required to commit/pay many thousands of dollars, months before a product is released with just a few pretty pictures in the solicitation. In order for me to try to predict how a case break will look on the internet when my customers make their decisions, I need to know content (checklists) and odds of the good hits.

Speaking of checklists…..What rookies are in 2014 Topps Museum and 2014 Gypsy Queen?

A checklist would motivate buyers to pre-order boxes if it was presented in time to pre-order. Currently we wait until the case breakers open some stuff to see the results before committing to a purchase.

Do we need checklists…NO…..Do we want checklists…YES !!

There are always collectors looking for the hottest rookies year to year…So it would seem to be in the best interest of these companies to keep their clients happy they would provide a checklist in the advertisement and then they can throw in a checklist sheet at the end of production into each box.

These aren’t National Secrets were talking about.
