Panini to release Titanium in Canada only

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor

Panini America has changed the way its releasing 2013-14 Titanium Hockey cards.

The company recently announced that hobby boxes would only be distributed in Canada through Universal Distribution. This is the first time Panini has released a hockey product in Canada only.

For those in the United States looking to purchase Titanium Hockey, they can order from a limited supply on the company’s website for $109.99.

“Titanium has a strong heritage as a hockey-only brand that has long been embraced by Canadian collectors,” said, D.J. Kazmierczak, Panini America’s Vice President of Sales, in a release. “As we looked at our 2013-14 NHL product schedule, we wanted to find a meaningful way to reward Canadian Panini Roundtable stores for their commitment and support of Panini NHL trading card products. We felt this was a clear way to do something special and create a unique point-of-differentiation for Canadian hobby shops and collectors.

“With an exclusive Canadian distributor, a Canada-only NHL product made a lot of sense and iCollectPanini.com gives us the flexibility to ensure that U.S. hockey fans still have access to purchase the 2013-14 Titanium product.”

I’m having flash backs to Upper Deck French.
A “limited” edition that was supposed to be only 5000 boxes (cases?) that they restarted the presses
to make more of once it zoomed in price, destroying the value of any collector (such as myself) who was
stupid enough to trust them.

This is one reason why serial numbering became so popular, as a way to reduce the odds of abuses.
Of course now companies like Topps have statements that they “authorized” a specific amount, but
there is no guarantee that “someone” will not make more. This garbage happens when you no longer
print stuff yourself as they once did.

Because they know American customers won’t buy it for $109.99.

For what its worth, Titanium is a pretty lousy product. So Panini just saved America a lot of wasted money.

There’s another version of this story out there that American dealers simply didn’t order this product so that’s why it’s a Canada only release
