Basketball | Bill Guthridge, Dean Smith, Goldin Auctions, Ken Goldin, Michael Jordan | Comments (0)
By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Basketball Editor
Goldin Auctions received attention recently when it announced four pieces of unique Michael Jordan memorabilia were up for auction.
These pieces included a recruiting letter from University of North Carolina head coach Dean Smith; a recruiting letter from assistant coach Bill Guthridge (both from 1980); Jordan’s UNC diploma; and Jordan’s UNC undergraduate academic record.
However, just days after the announcement, Jordan’s mother Deloris Jordan told ESPN the items were not legitimate because she had the original documents in storage.
However, Goldin Auctions announced today that it has taken steps to ensure that the “clear and undisputed title will pass to the winning bidder of each of the four UNC Michael Jordan items, including confirmation that neither Michael Jordan nor his family will dispute said title.”

When In The Game’s Heroes & Prospects hits this week, the products will celebrate a decade of releases.
It has featured many of today’s NHL stars before they made it big such as Sidney Crosby, John Tavares and Steven Stamkos.
In The Game employees look back on 10 years on Heroes & Prospects.
With the 10th anniversary coming up, what stands out to you from Heroes & Prospects?
What stands out most for me is the way that this brand has evolved over the past 10 years. With each season, a new crop of exciting young players comes to the forefront for collectors through the release of Heroes & Prospects.
This product has always featured an outstanding selection of autographs and game-used memorabilia that appeals to a wide range of collectors. We have added many interesting and collectible features over the years to keep things fresh and to add more value to every box.

Postseason celebrations — and a small selection of Series 2 cards — appear to be among the short-printed variations in 2014 Topps Series 1, according to a small selection of collectors who have posted their findings on Internet auction sites so far.
The first baseball card set of 2014 officially arrives in hobby shops on Wednesday.
Some of the cards found have numbers higher than 331, where Series 1 stops, while others have two photos. And some cards appear to have the return of the sparkle variations as well.
The list below contains cards that are confirmed as having two photos, having Series 2 numbers or having sparkles.

Baseball, Box Busters & Ripping Retail | 2014 Topps Triple Threads, 2014 Triple Threads, MLB, Topps, Triple Threads | Comments (14)
For the ninth straight year, Topps is readying Triple Threads with trios of Relics, trios of autos and, well, more high-end possibilities than ever.
When 2014 Topps Triple Threads arrives in hobby shops on Sept. 10, it will include familiar two pack options per box adopted in recent years. One pack will include three base cards, two parallels, a triple Relic and a Unity single-auto jumbo Relic. The other will have three base cards, two parallels a signed triple Relic and a jumbo Unity Relic. Each will be numbered to 36 or less or 99 or less depending on type.
New for this year will be Triple Hits — deluxe cards that have autographs, Relics and a handprint — while Triple Threads Transparencies will have a jumbo Relic and an auto on acetate. Triple Hits will be a redemption because of the size — and limited to 10 — while the Transparencies will be numbered to 25 with a 1/1 Onyx parallel to chase.

Nearly every trading card company tried to secure an NHL license in the early 1990s – but not all of them succeeded.
After Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, interest in hockey and hockey memorabilia grew in the United States, and card companies took notice.
Upper Deck, Pro Set and Score expanded into the hockey card market in 1990, with companies such as Leaf, Fleer and Pacific joining later that decade.
But one company just couldn’t make the cut – Action Packed.

Basketball | 2003 NBA Draft, Carmelo Anthony, Carmelo Anthony rookie cards, New York Knicks | Comments (2)
With the New York Knicks struggling this season, Carmelo Anthony has had to stand in front of his locker trying to explain the woes.
Anthony was once again the center of attention on Friday night with reporters clamoring to talk to the Knicks star, but for an entirely different reason.
Anthony scored 62 points, setting a New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden record, against the Charlotte Bobcats. He did it in less than 39 minutes and sat for most of the fourth quarter.
The Madison Square Garden scoring record was held by Kobe Bryant. He did it five years ago when he dropped 61 points against the Knicks.
Anthony was part of the 2003 draft class that featured LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. He spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Denver Nuggets before being traded to New York during the 2010-11 season.
Anthony has 4,623 cards, according to the Beckett.com database, and more than 1,000 autographs.
An even more astonishing number – Anthony has 62 Rookie Cards. Sixty-two.

Bowman Chrome. Minis. Prospects. Rookies. Factory Set. Bonus Refractor parallels.
Those few words should sum up it all when it comes to Topps‘ latest release — a test-run if you will — that will take the 2013 Bowman Chrome set, modify it into a 330-card prospect and rookies edition and release it in a shrunken but high-end factory set form.
