First look: 2012-13 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey

The Cup is coming after all.

The hockey season couldn’t end for Upper Deck without one of its signature products – 2012-13 The Cup will be released featuring Rookie Cards of Chris Kreider, Sven Baertschi and Torey Krug.

Each tin will come with two autographed patch cards with one of them being a Rookie Card. There will be five Cup cards in every tin.

The different types of hits in The Cup are exactly what collectors have expected from Upper Deck. They could find Autographed Laundry Tags, Limited Logos, Property Of memorabilia cards, Program of Excellence cards and much more.

UD is adding a new subset called Brilliance that will feature autographs from stars over logos. In addition, there are Autographed Monumental Patch cards with jumbo-sized unique patches with an autograph cutout.

One of the top cards out of The Cup ever year are the shield cards. This time collectors will find them in booklet versions of up to three players.

Upper Deck will include a two-card bonus pack of Ultimate in every tin. There will be an autograph or memorabilia card in every bonus pack. Collectors can find hits from Ultimate Collection Auto Rookies, Ultimate Signatures, 1997 Legend Autos, Ultimate Rookie Patches, Ultimate Auto Rookie Shield Variation and more.

The Cup is scheduled to come out Oct. 22.

So a 2012-13 product is coming out not only several months after the first 2013-14 products, but after the 2013-14 regular season starts? Why not just announce a new 1979-80 product with a Wayne Gretzky rookie? I’m sorry, but this is just stupid. Time for the NHL licensors to set parameters as to when a season’s products can start and when they must stop. There should be no overlap. Beckett will be doing the hobby a disservice if any cards from this product get an RC tag. This is an obvious attempt to get around the NHL’s not allowing rookies from last season in last season’s products (which in itself was a very stupid idea).

This product is designed and pre-produced long before the lockout was announced, there is no way UD would lose that money and not release this product. I would not be surprised if they have an agreement allowing them to do this on lockout years.

I agree with Paul. 2013-14 products are now getting into high gear, we are days away from opening the new season. 2012-13 Panini Prime was released after a couple of 2013-14 had already hit the “ice” and now The Cup even later. Why not just forget about last season and release these 2 sets under the 2013-14 season. A collector may walk into a hobby shop and see The Cup, for instance, and think off hand they may get a Yakupov RC not realizing its from last season. At first look they might not see 2012-13 on the packaging.

This product will not (by the description) have any new rookies from this years rookie crop. It only lists last years rookies. People need to read, as to assume. If it does (have new roookies) it would be a big mistake. As for these cards having a Rookie card tag, they should have one, they are real rookie cards.

As for ending last years product, I fully agree. They cancelled the set last year, leave it in the past and forget about it. These companies have to stop trying to grab more money any way they see fit. This seems to me as a money grab. They could have inserted all these cards into the 13-14 Cup and just left them as regular cards. Collector’s are past last years product and are now on the hunt for the new stuff.

A retailer told me that they are selling the product 100$ under the suggested retailed price. I totally agree that this product should have not been released. This is the highest gear upper deck have and they selling it like low-range collection. Like if Ferrari remaking is 1967 GTO at a cheap price. They are selling us card the same way Tabacco brand are selling their cigarette. Fortunately pannini compete them well this year. With a poor web site design, a freaking bad redemption program and not so good mid-range collections and a very ,very awful design with poor sub-set with the series 1 …..Upper Deck need a serious kick in the ass by us,collectors and by serious competitors
