Week 4: Monday Morning Collector

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Quarterbacks take the spotlight week in and week out in the NFL. But in Week 4, we’re going to focus on the running backs.

Several running backs had impressive showings this weekend – and late last week.

Three that stood out from the crowd were San Francisco’s Frank Gore, Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson and Detroit’s Reggie Bush.

Of course, we still have to give a shout out to Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers for their performances this weekend.

Veterans of the Week

Frank Gore, RB, San Francisco 49ers

Many NFL pundits wondered when Gore would have a breakout game to get his season rolling. It happened last week when he rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown in a 35-11 win over the St. Louis Rams.

Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez throws wild no-hitter

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

It took until the ninth inning of the 162nd game of the season for everything to come together for the last-place Miami Marlins.

Pitcher Henderson Alvarez no-hit the AL Central-winning Detroit Tigers for nine innings but it took a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to score a run and secure his win. The right-hander finishes the season with a 5-6 record, and the no-no ups his career mark to 15-23 over three seasons.

For collectors, Alvarez appears on 131 different baseball cards since making his minor-league cardboard debut in 2009. His cards (click here for a checklist or OPG) are valued at a total of $440, excluding rarities.

Denis Brodeur’s hockey impact extends far beyond his famous son

By Dan Good | Contributing Writer

The hockey world lost somebody special Thursday.

Denis Brodeur passed away at the age of 82.

He’s best known because of his famous son, Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. But his impacts on the game – and card collecting – extend far beyond his lineage. A lifelong photographer, Denis Brodeur captured decades of hockey moments.

If you’re a hockey fan, you’ve probably seen his photos and didn’t even realize it. Wayne Gretzky. Mark Messier. Patrick Roy. Gordie Howe. Stanley Cup victories. The winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series. He was there, snapping away, a witness to history.

He captured many of his photos as the longtime photographer for the Montreal Canadiens (he was also a photographer for baseball’s Montreal Expos).

Later in his life, he sold his hockey images to the NHL.

Card companies rely heavily on the league’s archives for photographs of retired players. So after the 2006 sale, Brodeur’s photos started regularly appearing on hockey cards produced by Upper Deck and Panini.

Cryptozoic changes autograph announcement policy

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Cryptozoic is changing the way it makes its autographs announcements.

Rather than wait until the cards are in-house, Cryptozoic will update collectors when it gets an autograph contract. Then will update as the process moves along. This will allow Cryptozoic to inform collectors and distributors what autographs will be in products earlier.

“The fact that this vital information is shared with our community sometimes only weeks before release is something we are aware has caused frustration for our distributors, dealers, and collectors,” Cryptozoic’s Miranda Charsky wrote on the company’s blog. “I think it is really important to acknowledge that we have certainly heard that feedback, and while we think the motivation for this policy was with our collectors’ interests at heart, we have decided we can best serve our customers by altering this policy moving forward.”

St. Louis Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha nearly no-hits Nationals

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

The rookie almost got the job done.

In just his 15th big-league appearance and ninth start of his career, St. Louis Cardinals rookie right-hander Michael Wacha nearly no-hit the Washington Nationals, losing a no-no to an infield single with two out in the ninth inning Tuesday night in St. Louis.

With the 2-0 victory, he moves to 4-1 with a 2.78 ERA on the season for the NL Central-leading Cardinals after walking just two batters and striking out nine.

The former Texas A&M star has appeared on cards since 2011 when he was a member of the USA Baseball squad. He appears on 260 different cards — 119 of those certified autos — valued at $1,560.25 before the start, according to the Beckett Media database. By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Do I have to say anything more?

He’s been the best player in the NFL so far this early season, perhaps staking claim to the MVP he lost out on last year. Through the first three games, Manning has 12 touchdowns passes.

In Monday night’s 37-21 win over the Oakland Raiders, Peyton Manning completed 32-of-37 throw for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Manning is one of the week’s Veterans of the Week in Monday Morning Collector (by the way, I know it’s Tuesday)

Tip Sheet: Five tips for success on eBay

By Ben Aguirre Jr.

To say the Internet has changed the game in terms of sports collectibles would be an understatement. The World Wide Web has opened the door for collector-to-collector trading across the world that really was previously only available to the most-connected dealers.

But perhaps no aspect of the Internet has had a bigger impact on the hobby than eBay. Hands down, the San Jose, Calif.-based company has been the dominant place to buy and sell cards online. When the auction site burst onto the scene in the late 1990s, collectors caught auction fever and were seemingly buying anything they had not ever seen before. Whether or not it was actually rare was not important — it was new to them.

But even though eBay has been a part of the hobby and business for more than 15 years now, there are still some older collectors and newer ones who do not fully understand some of the nuances of buying and selling on the site.
Here are some tips to make the site work for you:

Looking for a bargain? Try a blind category search. Instead of searching for something specific like a 1986-1987 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card, search the entire category of basketball cards and then sort the search by “ending soonest.” There are lots of good bargains to be had using this method.

Auction of a Lifetime: Heritage readies Stan Musial collection for November sale

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Baseball great Stan Musial logged 3,630 hits in the major leagues – a feat topped by only three players in the history of the game – but he’s going to add one more hit in November.

His memorabilia is hitting the auction block via Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

musialauction4There will be more than 500 lots from the life of the St. Louis Cardinals great and Hall of Famer up for grabs – everything from his Navy uniforms (military and baseball) to his famed harmonicas and even World Series rings received from the Cardinals in recent years. While the collection spans much of his career, not everything from the playing days of “Stan The Man” is represented in the sale, according to Heritage Director of Sports Auctions Chris Ivy. Either way, though, he said it’s a mix of memorabilia that ranks high among the sales that Heritage has handled.

“The Musials were very generous with the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum when Stan retired, so most of his uniforms, bats and various championship and MVP awards were donated long ago,” Ivy said. “The collection consigned to Heritage is largely comprised of material from Stan’s retirement years, but there are some really great highlight pieces from his years of active duty.”
