First look: 2013-14 Topps Premier Gold (English Premier League soccer cards)

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Topps is expanding its soccer product to the English Premier League.

In mid-December, Topps is scheduled to release a high-end soccer product with 2013-14 Topps Premier Gold. The hit-per-pack product will contain 10 packs with five cards in each pack – meaning every box will have 10 hits: five autographs and five memorabilia cards.

The EPL set will include past and present players.

The autographs will feature several subsets including Star Players, Matchwinners, Future Stars and International Icon Autographs. There will also be Gold, Orange, Platinum and Printing Plate parallels. In addition, there will be dual, triple and quad autographs.

Relics will come in Single and Jumbo form with Gold, Copper and Platinum parallels. Collectors can also find Dual, Triple and Quad Relics.

Topps will combine the two to offer Autographed Relic cards.

The base set will feature 100 cards of the top stars in the EPL. The base set also will have Green (numbered to 99), Orange (#’d to 11), Platinum (1-of-1), Premier Gold (1-of-1) and Printing Plate (1-of-1) parallels.

Collectors will be able to find several types of inserts:
- Hot Shot: the top goal scorers in the EPL
- Midfield Maestros
- Shot-Stoppers: top goal keepers in the league
- Touch Tacklers: top defenders
- Future Stars: best young talent

Update: Topps confirmed this will be a global release.

“Waiting for this forever”
Topps has been trying to get collectors to buy upmarket English Soccer for well over a decade. Topps keep changing the name so it looks like something new, Authentics….
Simple facts are that soccer card collectors have got burnt buying Topps so called upmarket soccer releases long ago. If you insist on collecting this, wait for the product dump – you can get the so called upmarket Topps soccer autographs out of Asia for a $1 a piece.

I Have collected Topps Premium Soccer for 12 years, this is one collection that I will not be pre ordering.
Why ?
1) The top footballers in the world are no longer in the English Premier Laegue (Messi, Neymar etc…).
2) Topps ALWAYS dumps soccer after you and I buy them. For example, this was sold for $35 by Topps then they sold through their Topps Ebay shop for $3
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Topps-Authentics-Signed-Ashley-Cole-Topps-Total-Football-sticker-2009-10-/350836110879?pt=UK_DVD_Film_TV_Autographs_CV&hash=item51af76361f
3) The pack break is a complete value failure. At $20 a pack and the top memorabilia/relic card you can expect to get is a Pele at $10
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PELE-2013-Allen-Ginter-Game-Used-/141043829548?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item20d6de0b2c
but most probably 99 cents
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steven-Lenhart-2013-Topps-MLS-Game-Worn-Jersey-Relic-Card-/261260114112?pt=US_Soccer_Trading_Cards&hash=item3cd450f8c0
The highest value autograph footballer playing in the Premier League right now (and he is expected to be leaving soon ) is Bale, Topps Authentic autograph goes for $9
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Topps-authentic-autographGareth-Bale-mint-/281143671028?pt=UK_SportsMemorabilia_Football_Memorabilia_ET&hash=item417577f8f4
As for a special hit. Lets say a 1 of 1, well the latest from Topps Soccer are going for $3
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-Topps-MLS-Soccer-Walter-Vilchez-Black-Printing-Plate-1-1-167-/151094577605?pt=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&hash=item232df049c5
This is a most definite sit on the sidelines collection, wait for the Ebay bargains.

The above 2 comments are a little unfair to Topps. Whilst I agree that the end result of collecting Topps upmarket soccer collections is as said above, a little more information needs to be added to give Topps credit with soccer collections where it is due.
Topps openly promotes that its Soccer success is with the 6 – 10 year old age group, and in that target group Topps are very successful with their soccer cards. Next month they are completing a major tour here in the UK for English Premier League Soccer cards with their Moshi Monsters.

That said, Topps is having a soccer identity crisis if they believe by repeating what they have done for some 15 years, which is failing with serious soccer cards, that this time it will be any different.

Will this be available for the US?

Topps soccer cards have always been able to be ordered from the US (one of the Topps online shops).

Seasoned collectors either wait for the Topps Ebay shops to discount, can be as much as 90% off or Ebay from other sellers at prices less than the Topps pre sell price.
