2013ToppsMini2

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

The Minis are back.

Topps unveiled the first glimpses at its second online-exclusive product of the year to Beckett Media on Thursday as it’s readying 2013 Topps Mini for release with its first public arrival at the National Sports Collectors Convention starting on July 31 in suburban Chicago.

While the cards inside the packs of this one are small — just 2 1/4 by 3 1/8 inches — versions of the cards you have already seen, there’s one big inclusion among those on the autograph checklist.

That’s Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig. It will be his first MLB autograph to arrive live into packs when this one arrives. (His other autographed cards from Topps have been redemptions.)

Minnesota prospect Byron Buxton collects baseball cards, just not his own

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

NEW YORK CITY | Byron Buxton still seems like a kid – loping around the outfield or sidling up to the batter’s box. Buxton looks like he’s still having fun on the baseball diamond.

His time at the MLB Futures Game reminds people that Buxton is still 19 despite being one of the top prospects in baseball. He got a $6 million signing bonus last year, which he spent part of on a house and cars for his family.

However, none of that prepared him for some of the best pitchers he faced so far in his young career.

“The first pitch I saw was 94, but it looked like 105 coming off the bench,” Buxton said following Sunday’s game at Citi Field, in which he went 0-2 with two strikeouts.

Dwight Howard introduced by the Houston Rockets

By Dan Good | Contributing Editor

Dwight Howard has a new home again.

The Rockets introduced their star center at a Saturday press conference, giving Houston championship hopes – and officially ending the off-season’s most hotly-contested free-agent sweepstakes.

The four-year deal is worth about $88 million.

Howard is coming off a disappointing, injury-plagued 2012-13 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. While Howard’s points and rebounds averages were consistent with his career marks, he failed to provide Los Angeles with a spark, and the team was swept in the first round of the playoffs. As the season unfolded and unwound, teammates and franchise icons publicly questioned his toughness and resolve.

Houston Astros rookie Jarred Cosart dazzles in Major League debut

Cosart

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

It was his first big-league start and his first big-league gem.

Houston Astros pitcher Jarred Cosart made it look simple in his Major League debut on Friday night in Tampa, no-hitting the Rays for the first six innings of his his first game before surrendering a single in the seventh. Cosart struck out just two, walked three and gave up just two hits as he took a scoreless night into the ninth before ceding to the bullpen and earning a 2-1 win over Tampa Bay and reigning AL Cy Young winner David Price.

Acquired in the deal that sent Hunter Pence to Philadelphia in July 2011, the 23-year-old right-hander was 7-4 this season with a 3.29 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 93 innings for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Redhawks before his promotion. Since drafted in 2009, he compiled a 32-26 record with a 3.29 ERA over five seasons.

Baseball and civic pride: Searching for MLB All-Star Game apple statues in New York City

IMAG0840

By Dan Good | Contributing Editor

I headed north, scrambling in skyscrapers’ shadows, in search of … apples.

No, not the edible kind – no Granny Smiths on this trip. I was looking for giant-sized apple statues, each six feet tall and adorned with MLB team logos. The apples are scattered about New York City, 35 in all, a precursor to this year’s All Star Game, which is being held at Citi Field, home of the Mets. Forever Collectibles designed the apples.

MLB added a social media element to the apple search, with prizes awarded to people who upload their photos to Instagram and tag them #ASGApples. Upload photos of 15 apples, and you’re entered to win the grand prize – World Series tickets.

Since I work in Midtown Manhattan, in the heart of apple territory, I decided to spend my Saturday morning tracking down these apple statues. Sure, winning would be nice, but this had more to do with baseball and civic pride.

The search deepened my appreciation for the Big Apple, a city full of contradictions – wealth and poverty, commercialism and scrappiness, dreams and noise, a city with baseball on its mind. Read More »

A helping hand: Collectors come to the aid of one of their own

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Dustin Smith goes to the Blowout Cards forum for relief from his everyday problems. He chats with friends about cards and shows off his collection.

But collecting cards has been put on pause because Dustin has bigger problems. He and his wife Kristen have a son, Connor, suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 1, an aggressive, terminal disease.

“It’s a disease that gets worse and worse,” Smith said. “We’ve seen it take a massive toll. He’s lost the ability to swallow, the ability to eat. Without a ventilator, he probably wouldn’t make it 24 hours.”

Dustin turned to the Blowout Cards message boards. He needed a place to vent his frustrations, a place where he could finally get all his feelings and thoughts down. He didn’t expect much of a response, but there was an overwhelming amount of support for the Michigan-based couple.

“It was just for mental support in the beginning,” Dustin said. “I’ve read some cool stories on there and have dealt with awesome people. They are incredibly generous. I wanted to share my story on there.”
