Topps confirms Axl Rose, Yasiel Puig autographs will appear in Allen & Ginter baseball set

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Perhaps they can be called sweet cards o’ mine?

Topps confirmed to Beckett Media on Wednesday that Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose and Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig will have autographed cards in the forthcoming Allen & Ginter baseball card set that arrives on Aug. 7.

The product styled after the late 1800s products of the same name will include nods to “world’s champions” in other sports beyond baseball as well as newsmakers in pop culture and beyond. This year’s version will include a few musicians as well as a set of guitar pick Relics.

Topps Assistant Brand Manager for Baseball Jon Einalhori confirmed the inclusions in an interview on Wednesday for the September issue of Beckett Baseball.

Here’s a short excerpt from the piece:

Your Turn (Beckett Baseball No. 90): Which MLB rookie arrivals were most memorable?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Their names are often atop the minds of many when they arrive but how their careers shape up changes over time.

Jackie Robinson, Stephen Strasburg, Fred Lynn, Kerry Wood, Albert Pujols, Mark Fidrych, Mike Trout, Joe Charboneau, Mark McGwire, Ichiro Suzuki, Fernando Valenzuela and now Yasiel Puig … the arrivals of phenoms in major league baseball often seem to captivate but they don’t always end up in Cooperstown like their first few weeks on the job might suggest.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy them.

And how about Ron Kittle? Go look up his Double-A and Triple-A stats before his debut in 1983. Some of you may already know that he impressed, but others may just know him as 1980s common-bin fodder with funny glasses.

Fleer Retro Basketball highlights female great and HOF baseball star

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Basketball Editor

Cheryl Miller is one of the greatest basketball players in women’s college history. She appears on a handful of cards in the 1990s, after her playing career was over – but a career that stuck with many.

When she graduated from USC in 1986, Miller was second all-time in scoring in the NCAA with 3,018 points. She now sits eighth on the list.

Upper Deck included Miller, the sister of Indiana Pacers great Reggie Miller, in 2012-13 Fleer Retro basketball that came out this week. Miller has popped up on cards earlier this year when Upper Deck also included her in 2012-13 SP Authentic.

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo signs for Sportkings

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Sports fans will be seeing an influx of Cristiano Ronaldo autographs – a long awaited card.

In The Game announced the international soccer star signed for Sportkings Series F, which will come out in late July. The signatures are on-card as well.

“This is a huge signing for ITG,” said Beckett senior market analyst Brian Fleischer. “Along with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is considered the best soccer player in the world. Besides his ability on the field, his collectability is intensified by having played for two of the most popular clubs in the world in Manchester United and Real Madrid. That, coupled with the scarcity of his certified autograph, makes this signing a sure fire winner for ITG.”
