Beckett 20 Questions on … The National

mantlebaseballs

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

This year’s National Sports Collectors Convention is less than two months away — set for July 31 to Aug. 4 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention center in suburban Chicago — and that means card companies and collectors already are preparing for the biggest cardboard showcase of the year.

We’re doing the same for The Show Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly.

As part of that issue, we want to know what you think of going to shows such as the NSCC as well as others. We want to know what you buy there, what makes you want to go and more. Check out our latest 20 Questions and tell us what you think — the results will appear in the issue, perhaps along with any comments you may have, too.

Most card shows are not what they used to be. Michigan used to be a hotbed of collecting, but now shows have few dealers who usually have the same stuff at each show. I began collecting again in 2001 after an 8 year absence and have really learned to enjoy the hobby more than ever. The NSCC has become my Mecca. It is so many things in one. Seeing old friends and putting faces those you’ve only met through the web, amazing collectibles, searching for things on my wantlist, and just the aura of the whole show. Before last years show, I had been doing same day trips to the National. Attending 3 days in Baltimore really got me hooked again to what the show is all about. This year marks about my 20th (if I had a full list of locations, I could figure it out) and I am counting the days until the show still deciding whether to extend my stay beyond the 3 days I have booked.

No surprise that KC is listed as the top destination for future card shows. I emailed th event coordinators last year about how great KC would be and got no response. City is perfectly located near major cities, East and West Coasters only have to fly mid-way across the country, has great venues for the event, a lot of passionate sports fans, and its not congested and a traffic nightmare like Chicago. KC is perfect.

Omaha? Really Chris? Have you ever been to Omaha?

With that said, Omaha would be an awesome place for the NSCC. Who cares if it doesn’t have a convention center, adequate hotel space, direct flights, or post-show entertainment options.

Ron Santo should be on the cover. He was just inducted into the hall of fame last year and it would be a nice tribute to the cubs legend. I think he’s a bigger chicago icon than michael jordan. that’s how much he’s beloved here

@Chris Harris

Have you ever been to Omaha? They host the CWS and Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting every year. The last 2 Olympic Swim Trials were held in the convention center. Direct flights are a problem, but all of the major carriers fly to Omaha. There are plenty of good restaurants in the downtown area. Don’t forget about the Omaha Storm Chasers, the KC Royals’ AAA club.

I live in Memphis so it’s extremely difficult to migrate up north for a week. Especially since it’s during football season. I have always dreamed of going, but it just needs to move around a little bit. It seems like it’s in Chicago or Baltimore every year now.
