Beckett Media launches weekly Facebook chats

For those of you who just can’t get enough sports card chatter in your lives beyond Beckett.com, our message boards, Box Busters episodes and Twitter, we’re adding something else to the mix.

Beckett Media will be launching weekly chats via Facebook with the first being Chatter Up, a Wednesday Q&A segment with Beckett Baseball Editor Chris Olds that appears on the Beckett Media LLC Facebook page.

For now, it will be a simple real-time chat. But, who knows, perhaps it will evolve into something more as we go along. Either way, it’s one more chance for collectors to chat about the hobby and collecting as well as win some cool stuff each and every week.

Chatter Up — Wednesday nights at 8:30 Central on the Beckett Media LLC Facebook page.

Want to win a four-hobby pack lot of Panini Marquee basketball cards? Check out the thread for this week here and tell us what you think in the comments below. We’ll pick one winner at random on May 29.

In The Game and Sport Kings merge into one company

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

In The Game, Inc., and Sport Kings LP are merging as one company.

The companies owned by Dr. Brian Price were kept separate, but they will now be one, Price announced today.

“By making this acquisition, I will be able to continue the production of the Sport Kings brand as the consolidation of the brand into the ITG family makes it easier to move forward with future releases,” Price said on his blog. “In the past websites, marketing and sales were kept separately causing confusion in the marketplace, this acquisition removes that confusion.”

Price will move forward with the Sportking series releasing Series F this summer before the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago.

Auction for autograph Jack Hoffman card goes unpaid

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor | Commentary & Opinion

Jack Hoffman’s story naturally went national. The 7-year-old fighting cancer scored a touchdown in the University of Nebraska’s spring game.

Anyone who watched the video from the game realized just how dusty it was in their room that day.

Upper Deck then created blow-up cards of Jack and one of the silver autographed cards (three are signed in silver and one in gold) was auctioned on eBay earlier this month for The Team Jack Foundation. The final bid came in at $6,100 – shattering anyone’s expectations and adding more excitement to a special story.

But unfortunately, there is no happy ending when it comes to this auction.

Too often there are stories of high-end ticket items that go unpaid – and that is true in this case as well.

Prep 2 Pro Sports owner Mike Schnoor, who is selling the cards on behalf of the Team Jack Foundation, has not received any money for the Hoffman card despite contacting the final bidder and the next couple of bidders on the list.

Five Stanley Cup cards to collect

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor

The Stanley Cup is unlike any other championship in the four major sports. Hockey players have superstitions surrounding the Cup and the championship trophy is its own character.

Over the years, trading cards have featured the Stanley Cup along with key moments from the entertaining series. Most recently, Upper Deck even featured cards with Cup winners showing off their special day with the trophy.

Here are five key cards or sets for collectors to look for.

1924 C144 Champ’s Cigarette Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup wasn’t always a 34-inch high trophy. One of the first renditions of it was much smaller. It was donated Lord Stanley in 1893 to the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada. Most experts believe the 1924 C144 Champ’s Cigarette was the first time ithe Stanley Cup appeared on a trading card.

Have some patience, Guns N’ Roses fans: A first look at Axl Rose’s first certified autograph trading card

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Now, all we need is a little patience.

When Topps announced in February that Axl Rose‘s first certified autograph was coming in 2013 Topps Archives — a retro-styled look at baseball cards with a bit of pop culture also infused — more than a few collectors and rock fans took notice.

The arrival of the next installment of the reigning Beckett Baseball Product of the Year is just 13 days away with Rose’s signatures sure to have a few people saying “you could be mine.”

Beckett Media got the first look at the unsigned version of the card on Thursday — a release that will have a standard autograph version as well as a version of the card printed on metal. It’s not going to be so easy to pull that one as just 25 copies of that version will be made.

Topps Archives football provides tribute to Chuck Muncie

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Former NFL Pro-Bowler Chuck Muncie died on Monday. He was 60.

Muncie played for the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers. He found his greatest successes for San Diego’s “Air Coryell” offense, scoring 19 touchdowns in 1981.

Muncie battled drug addiction during his career, but later turned his life around – and became a mentor and counselor.

Muncie doesn’t have many cards – just 39 in the Beckett database – but a new release is bringing renewed interest to his career. Muncie is part of 2013 Topps Archives football. His card #237 is a short-print, but he also has an autograph in the set.

An interview with hockey legend Patrick Roy

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor

Hockey fans got a treat at the Sportscard & Memorabilia Expo when hockey goaltending legend Patrick Roy signed for what he says was his only card show appearance.

Fans took pictures with Roy, who was there as part of a 1993 Montreal Canadiens reunion. They also had pictures, pucks and sticks signed by the hockey great.

After his signing, Patrick Roy spent a few minutes with Beckett Media talking about his own collection and meeting fans.

Q. What sort of unique items did you see out there today?

A. Unique items? There is nothing in my head right now popping up. Basically, to be honest with you because I’ve been a hockey card collector, I respect everything. Maybe 10-15 year ago I stopped. But what people like to collect is what matters and precious to your eyes. I respect whatever people want to get signed.
