The card company debuted the layered product last season with one of the most hyped rookie classes. It hasn’t changed much in 2013 Topps Strata football, and left in what collectors enjoyed about the product.

Each box guarantees two autographs, one relic card and a rookie die-cut. Case hits include one Strata Signature Relic, three Clear-Cut Autographed Patch cards and three Rookie Patch cards.

The first Axl Rose Heavy Metal Autograph redemption card from 2013 Topps Archives has hit the auction block on eBay a day before the product’s official release, and it’s already picking up steam after just a few hours online.

How fast? You could say it’s been gaining bids faster than Rose singing “Garden of Eden” on Use Your Illusion I.

There will be a few questions about this card in the coming days and weeks, but none are more important than how high will it go?

From non-paying bidder to $30K … Team Jack gets its money

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Footall Editor

Even though the Team Jack Foundation didn’t get paid from the initial eBay auction for a signed blow-up card of 7-year-old Jack Hoffman who is fighting brain cancer – the family is pretty happy with the ending.

After Beckett reported the news of the non-sale, many potential buyers contacted Mike Schnoor, owner of Prep 2 Pro Sports in Norfolk, Neb., who was handling the auction on behalf of the charity, to buy the card.

Three different buyers offered $10,000, and since Schnoor had three versions all signed in silver pen, he sold all three and raised $30,000 – a big difference from the $6,100 they should have received from the eBay auction.

Glove Story: A tale of SuperCollecting, first pitches and alternative bachelor party rituals

KimmesBernieBrewer

Beckett SuperCollector Kevin Kimmes, left, recently threw out the first pitch at a Milwaukee Brewers game — and he also added a little something to his John Axford collection.

By Kevin Kimmes | Guest Writer | Opinion & Commentary

I have a bucket list.

A few years ago, I purchased a book — The Baseball Fan’s Bucket List: 162 Things You Must See, Do, Get & Experience Before You Die by Robert Santelli and Jenna Santelli on a whim from Barnes & Noble. I figured that it appealed to the collector/checklist-chaser side of me and that I would probably never complete it, but it would give me some great ideas for road trips, leisure reading and films that I may have missed.

One entry, however, caught my eye right away … No. 139: Throw Out The First Pitch.

The entry struck me due to the presumed difficulty associated with it, despite the fact that the author claimed that it is actually easier to accomplish than one might think, especially at the minor-league level. I filed the idea away, assuming that it would be one of those entries that I would probably never complete. That was until I decided to get married.

When it came time for planning my bachelor party, my brother asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that I wanted to skip all the cliché stuff and just have a day filled with baseball: batting cages, tailgating, oh yeah … and throwing out the first pitch at a game.

“So, like a t-ball game? Little league?” was my brother’s response. “I don’t think the Brewers are going to let you do this just because you’re getting married.”

Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez nearly no-hits Twins

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Detroit Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez may only have a 5-4 record this season, but his win over the Minnesota Twins Friday night was one of the more memorable games of his career.

He nearly threw the second no-hitter of his eight-years in MLB, blanking the Twins for a 6-0 win at home but allowing a single hit in the ninth to Joe Mauer. He would have been just the sixth pitcher to throw a no-no in each league.

Sanchez (click here for a checklist or OPG) appears on just 571 cards for his career, carrying a total value of just $1,919.05, excluding rarities. His 12 Rookie Cards can be found in 2005 MLB products with his priciest being his 2005 Ultimate Signature card that typically checks in at $60 or less. It’s an autographed card limited to just 125 serial-numberd copies.

Non-sports cards provide innocent, sentimental fun – and sometimes value, too

By Dan Good | Contributing Editor

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A sunbaked Sunday morning. Early risers congregate on the sidewalk, waiting. The doors will open soon, beginning a day of study and reflection.

No, this isn’t church, but the passion is similar.

Collectors gather in clusters – husbands and wives, fathers and sons. New friends. Old friends. Someone steps out of the line to smoke a cigarette. Others stay, discussing their collections. It’s daunting to face a hobby landscape without limits, and this is as close as you’ll find – the Philly Non-Sports Card Show, where cards of 1800s flowers and 2000s blockbusters intersect.

The twice-yearly show has become a hobby staple since its inception in 1984, a deviation from the usual shows devoted to baseball and football cards.
