First look: 2013 Legends of the Gridiron

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Leaf has cobbled together the autographs of many famous football icons for a new product.

The cut-autograph product – 2013 Legends of the Gridiron – will focus on Hall of Famers, superstars and Heisman Trophy winners.

Each box will contain just one encapsulated card in this very limited production run. Just 99 12-box cases will be produced of Legends of the Gridiron.

Autographs include a wide array of football names such as Vince Lombardi, Joe Paterno, Art Rooney, Tom Landry, Wellington Mara, Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas and more.

Leaf is using reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in its product again featuring him on a dual cut autographs with others such as Don Miller and Jim Crowley.

Legends of the Gridiron will ship in early May.

Brian Grey often doesn’t do his homework when it comes to cut signatures. he has used secretarial signatures in previous products so i would be wary about this product

Bart,

Your comment is irresponsibly stated.

PSA and/or JSA review the cuts in our products.

Of the 100,000 plus cuts we’ve produced, we have had 3 total cuts that were called into question.
All 3 were deemed authentic by one of the above authenticators prior to use. All three cuts were immediately without question or delay.

If this percentage is not satisfying to you, you shouldn’t buy any cut signature products, as that percentage is most likely an industry best.

While I personally am a fan of Leaf’s cut signature products, I also have to agree with Bart about some of the autos in these products. I have at least one cut signature that I feel pretty sure is in fact just an autopen copy of the person’s signature.
Also, stating that this product includes “Heisman” winners gives Leaf the ability to flood a product with certain autos. I have yet to buy ANY football cut signature product that I didn’t end up with several Danny Wuerffel autos!!

PSA passes ALOT of secretarials. Just go to ebay and look how many Debbie Reynolds secretarial signatures PSA has passed, including the several Leaf has used in their products. Relying 100% on PSA or JSA is not a smart thing to do.

Do I even need to go into the mess that is JSA?

Bart,
in the end the only signature you can be 100% sure of is one signed in your presence.

I personally only buy on card autographs from companies I know and have no reason to believe
that they were not signed by someone else. I prefer stuff signed in the presence of the company
rather than trust some agent handed off stuff. Sadly, there have been cases where the athlete
allowed others to sign for them.

I also buy some old school stuff made from canceled checks or complete canceled checks or
contracts. The nice thing about the canceled check ones is that a forger knows that they will go
to prison for a long, long time for counterfeiting a financial instrument and that reduces the risk of fakes.
