Superman: The Legend Trading Cards preview

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

With all the comic book cards on trading cards lately, we can’t forget the Man of Steel.

Superman: The Legend Trading Cards will be released later this month by Cryptozoic.

Cards will feature characters from inside Superman’s world. The 63-card base set will have new original art. Chase sets include Alternate Reality foil cards, Secret Origins Puzzle, Women of the Superman Universe and X-Ray Vision.

Sketch cards are popular in comic trading card sets. Superman is no different with one sketch card in every box. Collectors can find redemptions for oversized sketch cards (4-inches by 6-inches).

Other hits include Printing Plates (1 in every 576 packs) and Foil Parallels (1:8).

There are five cards in a pack and 24 packs in a box. Superman: The Legend Trading Cards is scheduled to come out March 21.

As much as I’m not a fan of the comic card genre, I always find that they do such a great job with the sketch cards. To produce a product that gives you a 1/1 in every box at a decent price is astounding – especially something that is truly unique – not just a different background color or foil.

It’s something that the sports market has never truly embraced and it’s a shame.

Tough part is actually identifying athletes in images on some sketches. Plus, for whatever reason, people seem to have a sometimes vitriolic reaction to anything other than photo-realistic artwork in the sports world.
