First Look: 2013 Topps Tribute World Baseball Classic Edition (with checklist)

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

The World Baseball Classic came and went and there’s one big development.

Its baseball cards are going high-end.

Topps unveiled on Thursday its plans for 2013 Topps Tribute World Baseball Classic Edition, a hit-per-pack product showing stars from this year’s event, which was won by the Dominican Republic team led by MVP Robinson Cano.

Each six-pack box will include four autograph cards along with two patch cards when it arrives on June 26. The base set will consist of 100 cards, each with Gold, Red and 1/1 Purple parallels.

The autographs will be found in standard form along with Blue (/50), Sepia (/35), Orange (/25), Gold (/15), Red (/5) and 1/2 Purple and Onyx parallels.

In addition, there will be World Baseball Classic Heroes Autographs — stars from the first two events — along with Tribute to International Legends cards, which will note top players from other countries. These cards will be limited to 15.

The patch cards will be a mix of Relics from WBC uniforms. There will be standard cards, along with Blue, Green, Orange, Gold, Red, Black and Purple. In addition, there will be redemption cards for full gamers from the 2009 event. There also will be 1/1 flag and logo patches, too.

Even though that was horrendously disapointing showing for the USA, that’s a lot of guaranteed hits for a baseball product, just curious about the price.

I suppose Topps is using stickers to get the product out as close to the end of the WBC as possible, but the Tribute cards were designed for on-card autographs. Love the globe background on the autograph cards though. Too bad I can’t afford any

I love Tribute. I won’t have anywhere near enough cash to get any of this product, but I will watch as many breaks of this as possible on Youtube. Maybe pick up some singles on Ebay if possible.
Also…
If it’s the difference between not having a star in the set, or having the autograph on a sticker, I’ll take the sticker auto any day.

My first reaction when I saw the headline was “WHY?” Then I saw that flag patch. Those are going to be HOT. Still, I won’t be interested, since the only cards I’d want will be out of my price range. I’ve got the boxed sets from the first two WBC’s though, and I’d get one again if they make one at a reasonable price.

So…yet again we will have to wait for Konami to release a more complete set as Topps can’t be bothered to make cards of non-MLB players or prospects.

I collect WBC cards only so I’m really excited about this product. ( I know there’s not a lot of $$$ in WBC cards BUT that’s the beauty of this hobby ). Anyways, I will be buying a few boxes of this product. I’m drooling for those flag patches.

Has anyone else not noticed that that’s not Miggy’s signature on his autographed card. Who wants to bet his wife signed them. Wow Topps!

It’s a scan of his autograph from very early in his career. That is just a photoshopped mock.
