First look: 2013 Prestige Football

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

The next season of football product is creeping up.

Panini America previewed 2013 Prestige football cards, revealing a breakdown of the one of the first NFL-licensed cards on the market.

Prestige will be Panini’s second football product with late-June release. Each hobby box will have four hits with at least two autographs in every box.

The newest rookies will also appear and will be the first Panini product to have updated rookie photos from the 2013 NFL Players Association Rookie Premiere.

There will be at least one Rookie Card in every pack with a number of inserts highlighting the newest draft class.

Highlights include:
- NFL Draft Picks, NFL Draft Tickets, NFL Draft City Destinations, NFL Passports.
- Acetate will have a big presence in Prestige with four die-cut inserts: NFL Shield, Stars of the NFL, Inside the Numbers and Fantasy Team.
- Two micro-etched inserts for the 2013 rookie class

Needs more flair. Underwhelming draft class + no college logos = meh. I do like acetate and die-cuts to make inserts more interesting.

I am usually a pretty big fan of Prestige cards, but the artwork on some of these is a little funky. I’ll probably still buy some just for giggles and grins.
Should be interesting to see who the “Hot Rookies” are this year seeing how there is, as many are saying, a weak draft class this year. There is usually someone that comes out of nowhere and takes the hobby by storm i.e. Russell Wilson, Doug Martin, Alfred Morris. Will there be someone like this in this years draft class? Only time will tell.

Upper Deck screwed the pooch on this one. Because they have the college license, that means these pre draft boxes will be the same as getting non-licenced baseball crap! I’ll pass!

Does the world need another unlicensed card product? Its not college, and its not pro. Its just a “player card”, which is “not Scottish”.
