The Golden Age has extended itself for at least another year.
Panini America revealed its plans for the sophomore release of its retro-styled baseball card set (one that includes way more than just baseball) on Tuesday as it announced 2013 Panini Golden Age is planned to arrive in June.
A 150-card base set will include stars from the sports world as well as newsmakers from the worlds of politics and pop culture. Each standard card, the company said, will have six mini variations for collectors to chase. Part of that pop culture? The Three Stooges are back once again — this time with a nine-card insert set of their own — as well as other appearances. Also part of the pop culture experience? Comic book icon Stan Lee and actress Bo Derek for starters.
Each hobby box ($3 per pack) should include one autograph and one memorabilia card as well as 24 minis. Also to be found are Bread for Energy and Tip Top Bread Label inserts — a nod to the earlier days of collecting where bread loafs included a card on the end — and several other inserts.
Among the old inserts having their own revival this time around will be a new version of Delong Gum cards — a two-per-box insert — along with a new helping of Exhibit cards and the Stooges inserts, which also will be one per box. The Exhibit cards will be box-toppers. Also to be found are a new inclusion — Golden Age playing cards, a 52-card release that also will include a pair of jokers found eight times per box.
A preliminary checklist was not released but among those mentioned by the company were Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra as well as legendary boxers Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns.
