First look: 2012-13 Elite Series basketball cards

By Chris Olds | Beckett Basketball Editor

The Elite name apparently isn’t elitist.

Panini America announced on Thursday yet another new NBA product for the 2012-13 season, and it’s got a familiar name — Elite Series.

Not to be confused with the recently released 2012-13 Elite, 2012-13 Elite Series will arrive in May with an assortment of familiar names — insert lines from the past — inside this one.

Collectors can find what Panini says are “re-imagined versions of many of Elite’s most popular inserts” such as Court Kings autographs, Passing the Torch, as well as Aspiration and Status diecuts. New for this one will be Elite Glass cards printed on thick acetate a la a backboard-style approach.

The big difference, though? Elite Series is going high-end — there will be just 10 cards in a box with four autographs and one Elite Glass card inside.

The base set will consist of 275 cards and there will be 14 insert sets in the brand, according to the company.

No other information — checklist, production quantities or signers — was given.

10 cards in a high end box and a 275 base card set? Laughable. Panini has lost their minds when it comes to producing sportscards.

What is the point of this set. Are they trying to justify making the Elite a high end product. What a waste.

ha ha whats next Panini retro nah I’ll pass. Not untill Panini scores Lebron or Jordan will their basketball be relevant. Seriously even with Kobe Durantula still we all know something is missing and Derrick Rose etc.
Sign them up Panini and in fact give Topps a liscence and let the fun begin.
thanks again
just saying….

Innovation, great use of modern technology, great graphics, what an imaginative use of basketball terminology for the titles of the insert sets, and you say it is short-printed with limited commons and no complete sets by the factory. Wow, that sounds like a product I will jump on.

BUT IT IS NOT THE PRODUCT LISTED IN THIS ARTICLE.

I would hate to be a Dealer and be forced into buying these cases only to know that with a flooded 2012-13 Panini Basketball market I will be selling all this product at discounted rates before the hype even begins.

I’ll wait for the major blowout sales on all the 2012-13 Panini Basketball products.
