Can you smell what Funko Pop! is cooking?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

For toy fans, they’re no secret. But for sports fans? Well, there just might be something cooking.

In the world of vinyl toys, that is.

Lynnwood, Wash.-based Funko is readying its second offering of Pop! vinyl toys coming in late summer with a handful of World Wrestling Entertainment stars getting the collectible anime-style treatment. Six WWE stars will be appearing on 4-inch, $10 figures — The Rock, CM Punk, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, John Cena, Sheamus and Rey Mysterio.

The figures will arrive in August — but won’t be the first sports toys from the company as it signed a deal with the NBA last year. Its second series of NBA player figures arrives in April — part of a massive offering of entertainment licenses that, if one isn’t purely a sports collector, should entice.

Literally everything from The Walking Dead to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and even Alan and Carlos from The Hangover have appeared on pieces of the pop culture-inflused art.

Who’s on cards? I don’t know … but Abbott and Costello are

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

“Who’s on first?” might be an appropriate question for tonight’s season-opener with the Houston Astros involved.

Or perhaps it’s I Don’t Know playing a few spots for the new-look American League squad.

But what we do know is that “Who’s on First?” is 75 years old this season and — believe it or not — there are more than a few baseball cards for “Who,” but not What, I Don’t Know, Today, Tomorrow or even Why.

Maybe for the right fielder, though.

Bin Laden card to be in Horrors of War II

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

As people walked the floor of the Industry Summit earlier this month, many stopped at the Famous Fabrics booth looking at what the company has on the schedule.

Then they paused.

Some were taken aback by one card in the showcase – an artistic portrait of Osama Bin Laden, a card that will be included in Horrors of Wars II, due out in late June.

Veteran hits highlight 2012 Totally Certified football

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

The name Totally Certified goes back to the late 1990s. Pinnacle introduced the brand with football, hockey and baseball.

Panini America revived the name in football in 2011, and brought it back for another go-around by releasing 2012 Totally Certified last week. Totally Certified is a hit-driven product with an autograph or memorabilia cards in each of the six packs.

The type of hits can vary in Totally Certified with the obvious autographs and memorabilia cards, but collectors also have a chance at pulling HRX video cards. One of these video cards of Andrew Luck has already popped up on eBay with significant asking price.

A look at 2012 Topps Valor football cards

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Topps’ 2012 Valor football has been out for nearly a week. The rookie product has been talked about through the week with many collectors immediately noticing the unique packaging – a tin box that resembles more of a prop from the movie ‘300.’

Does this high-end product have staying power? Will it be something we see again next year?

Valor uses strong symbolism throughout putting together inserts such as ‘Courage’ and ‘Glory.’ While Topps doesn’t use many words, the focus of Valor is clear.

First look: 2012-13 Rookie Anthology Hockey

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor

Rookie Anthology made its debut last year with an eclectic group of cards in one box. Collectors found Rookie Cards for previously released products for many late call-ups.

This time around, Panini America is keeping with the same theme but adding a couple extras such as Prizm preview packs.

Because of the limited amount of rookies that are allowed in 2012-13 products, Panini canceled many of its regular hockey products this season – limiting the amount of Rookie Cards for players such as Sven Baertschi, Chris Kreider and Jaden Schwartz.

This seems like a perfect moment for 2012-13 Rookie Anthology.

What if you could find anything on a card?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary & Opinion

What if you could open a pack of cards and find absolutely anything inside … what would it be?

It’s a simple question that could have so many answers from so many people if the real-world realities of intellectual property rights, personality rights and so on didn’t exist. You know, that’s the stuff that all involves money if a product is to be sold using somebody’s owned logos, names, trademarks and so on.

For some of us out there, fantasy cards can become a reality when we sit down with a copy of Photoshop and make those ideas happen just for fun. However, in the real world for cards to exist and be sold there are plenty of legal hurdles that must be cleared. With the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’re taking a look at sports movies and their memorabilia, and one short column in that issue talks about one of my “other” hobbies and how it came about.

What’s my niche? When it comes to fantasy cards, I’ve dabbled here and there with cards of sports stars from movies. Why? Why not. They’re just for fun, of course.

New Jersey resident wins a day with Hakeem Nicks

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Frank Rosato couldn’t believe the words being read aloud by the owner of his local card shop.

The New Jersey resident listened intently to a letter from Panini America and it seemed to take a second to soak in just what was said. Rosato was the national grand prizewinner in Panini’s NFL Player of the Day promotion.

Rosato will get to spend the day with New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks on April 27. Rosato will get a private party with Nicks, sign free autographs for fans at Attack of the Baseball Cards in Union, N.J, and get a $250 shopping spree to spend on Panini products.

CONTEST: Four NFL players who surprised in 2012

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

The 2012 NFL season will be remembered for the hyped-up rookies that made good and veterans who proved they were still elite players despite serious offseason surgery.

However, several football players unexpectedly jumped on to the scene in 2012 – guys who were afterthoughts or backups coming into the season.

Here’s a look at some who surprised in 2012.

1. Doug Martin, Tampa Bay, RB (Martin’s OPG): The Tampa Bay rookie had 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns on 319 carries. Martin was a first-round draft pick, but excelling this quickly caught many by surprise. By Week 9, NFL fans knew his name as Martin rushed for 251 yards in a 42-32 win over Oakland.

Don’t worry, Daniel Hudson … you weren’t the first

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Daniel Hudson blew out his elbow during a game last season and apparently got a not-so-happy reminder of the injury recently.

Collecting ’42’ via its baseball cards and its stars

Lucas Black, left, plays Pee Wee Reese while Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson in "42" arriving in theaters on April 12. (Warner Bros. photo)

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary & Opinion

Many of us may think we know the story of Jackie Robinson — and we might from what we have read or seen on cardboard — but for many who see 42 beginning on April 12 his cardboard might be seen a bit differently.

His cards might be seen as must-haves.

Robinson is one of many in the Warner Bros. film who can be found on baseball cards — and some of the actors in the film have their share of collectibles, too. Here’s a rundown of who’s playing who along with some tidbits from an advance screening last week in Dallas as well as stats and values as found in the Beckett.com database.

Guest commentary: The NBA’s greatest win streak eludes cardboard

By Stan Carlberg | Guest Commentary & Opinion

In the midst of March Madness, the Miami Heat’s historical run has caught the imagination of basketball fans everywhere, including college hoops fanatics. But as much as Miami’s winning streak has intrigued the basketball world, if it weren’t for the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers setting what many believe to be one of the game’s unbreakable records, the Heat’s current run wouldn’t have as much drama or pressure to reach that magical No. 33.

As LeBron James and Co. challenge one of the game’s most coveted marks — and put in a bid as one of the greatest teams ever — in researching collectibles that center around the Lakers’ 33-game winning streak, I was surprised at how little memorabilia there is on the historic run.

Press Pass jumps on Parks & Recreation license

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

One of TV’s top shows is coming to cards.

Press Pass announced its newest license for Parks and Recreation while at the Industry Summit in Las Vegas last week. Press Pass had licenses in the entertainment field before with Elvis and Kiss cards. But this takes the company – which usually focuses on racing and football – in a different direction.

“It’s a business we’ve eyed for quite awhile now. We wanted to find a property we felt had some good momentum to kick things off,” said Press Pass’s Tom Farrell, vice president of product development. “Pop culture has been on such a role, from autograph heavy sets to numerous entertainment sets; collectors are just hungry for pop culture products.”

Industry Summit: Panini America’s corporate address

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

LAS VEGAS – The crowd at The Industry Summit shuffled into a showroom at The Orleans in Las Vegas on Tuesday. The room is usually reserved for concerts or big shows at the casino, but instead Panini America spoke to a room full of dealers.

It did not feel like a typical corporate address at The Industry Summit. The stage had three chairs in the center, banners of Panini’s exclusive athletes and purple lighting, giving the address of far different feel than those held in a conference room.

Panini discussed the company’s growth and where it believes it is headed. Here are the highlights from the address:
