Classic Auctions’ Winter 2013 Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction opened to bidders today with plenty of memorabilia, cards and interesting items hockey collectors could enjoy.
The auction consists of more than 1,100 lots of many vintage items.
One of the most popular lots in the early bidding is a 13-inch Calgary Flames 1988-89 Stanley Cup Championship Trophy. The starting bid opened at $1,500 and has already shot past $2,000 with nearly a month left on the auction.
Another popular item includes Sergei Starikov’s 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics Gold Medal won by the Soviet Union. The medal is already up to $6,000.
Plenty of game-worn gear highlights the collection with photo-matched items from players such as Cam Neely, Ray Borque and Tyler Seguin. Hockey enthusiasts can also find game-used sticks, goalie masks and awards.
Then there are quirkier items, including Major Frederic McLaughlin’s 1934 Stanley Cup Championship belt buckle, who was owner of the Chicago Blackhawks; a pair of attached seats from Detroit Olympia; and Guy Lafleur’s Breitling emergency pilot watch.
One of the early popular auctions is John Wharton’s 1998 Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Championship ring. Even with nearly a month to go, the item is already up to $6,000. Wharton was the head athletic trainer for the Red Wings
Cards also make their way into the collection with a lot of PSA-graded Bobby Orr cards from 1968-72; a complete set of 1910-11 Sweet Corporal postcards and a near complete set of 1971-72 O-Pee-Chee cards.
