To be in the most collected category you need 3 things:

- Success in the game, including NBA titles, league and finals MVPs
- That most unusual of ingredients called charisma. The media and collectors love it, and obviously playing most of your career in a club with a large media audience helps a lot too.
- Somebody who revolutionized the position would be a big plus.

Who scores highest on all 3 counts: the one and only Magic Johnson!

In fact he is probably the only point guard who could play effectively all 5 positions as evidenced by game 6 of the NBA finals in his rookie year where he started at center and got 42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.

As far as key cards people will want, it will start with the players rookie card because of it being their first licensed professional cards circulated on the market. For point guards, I feel the most collectible/higher demand cards are (all being graded by the way) are the 1980-81 Topps Basketball #6 Bird/Erving/Johnson RC (Grade 9, 9.5, or 10), 1984-85 Star John Stockton XRC (Grades 9,9.5, or 10), 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractors Allen Iverson RC (Graded 9.5 or 10), a few Derrick Rose's that are auto patches or auto refractors that are low number cards with 9.5 or 10 grades.

Its hard to say who the most collectible point guard is. Reason being is because every player has a card that people who collect basketball cards really want. The rarity and odds of pulling the card make it a high demand for collectors to want to have in their collection. Every player has a must have card that people will want just because of those facts alone.

I think John Stockton was the best pure point guard, but as much as I like and collect his cards I don't think he is the most collectible. I think the most collectible point guard of all-time is Magic Johnson, however I think Derrick Rose may challenge that if he can stay healthy and the Bulls can win some championships with him.

When I think "Point Guard", I think John Stockton. He was the prototypical pass-first floor general who made everyone around him better.

Magic. He was a Laker, a champion several times over, he had to me the best player vs player rivalry in any team sport with Larry Bird, and he was an athletic freak to the extent that a new term was invented to better illustrate his position (point forward). He was also part of the Dream Team, which would put him over any of the newer guys.

To me, not necessarily the most collectable, it would be John Stockton. His cards do tend to garner value on the secondary market. But when Stockton and Malone ruled Utah, no tandem was better. Magic had a lot more weapons that Stockton did.

Derrick Rose is going to change the way we look at this position the same way Devin Hester made us look at kick returners in a new light. I do not think the NBA will change rules to contain this Chicagoan the way the NFL did for his football-playing counterpart, but Rose's impact will be enormous.
