First look: 2013 Topps baseball cards (with FINAL checklist)

Update:  Topps has released the final Series 1 checklist. See it at the end of the story.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Topps unveiled the first look at the 2013 edition of its flagship baseball card set on Friday, and it’s one that just might excite collectors of the longest-running MLB brand.

And it just might excite fans of “the chase,” too.

The chase this year is the chase of history — the pennant, the record books and more in MLB history — while the company says it will offer more to chase in its flagship product, too, which in its 61st year of full-size release.

Every 36-pack hobby box will contain one autograph or Relic card, while every HTA Jumbo box will contain three — one auto and two Relics — when it arrives on Jan. 25.

The base set will consist of 330 cards each with Gold parallels limited to 2,013 copies and Black parallels limited to 62. New this year will be Pink parallels limited to 50 (a nod to the popular Breast Cancer Awareness cards in football) and Desert Camo foil parallels (a nod to the military) limited to 99. Rounding out the offerings will be Emerald foil (1:6), Platinum 1/1s, hobby-only printing plates and a partial-parallel set of silks (100 players, limited to 50).

The metallic manufactured Relics will return in a new form for 2013 with MVP and Cy Young award winner cards as well as Proven Mettle Coin Cards. Each has an embedded piece of metal with an appropriate design for the award or a coin-like finish. They will be found one per Jumbo box or one per case in hobby. The Proven Mettle cards will have three parallels — Copper (/99), Wrought Iron (/50) and Steel (/10).

The autograph lineup is a bit deeper this year with a mix of modern, retro and diecut designs. Chasing History will note 30 or more achievers from the past and present, while the Chasing the Dream set will showcase 20-plus potential superstars in the making. The Cut to the Chase cards will showcase just five notable players on signed diecut cards limited to just 10 copies apiece, while Chasing History 1/1 cuts will highlight notable players and others in history.

The Greats autograph cards will highlight 15 players via on-card sigs and will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs, while the Calling Cards set will be even smaller with just five. Speaking of small, the 1972 Topps baseball design will be found in Mini form in packs with 10 players signing minis that will be limited to just 10 copies.

Autographed Relics will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs with auto-mem versions of the Chasing History, Chasing the Dream and Cut to the Chase sets, while The Greats, Calling Cards and World Series Champions also will be represented. Each of these will be limited to 50 or less with the World Series most plentiful and three of the sets limited to as few as five cards per player.

The Relic lineup will follow that of the aforementioned signatures — Chasing History, Chasing the Dream, Cut to the CHase, TheGreats, Calling Cards, 1972 Topps Minis, World Series Champions all will have Relic versions. Four of those sets will be limited to just 25 copies while the World Series Relics will be limited to 100 and the first two sets mentioned will not be numbered.

In the Name Relics will utilize full letters from MLB All-Stars’ warmup jerseys. These 1/1s will only be found in Hobby and HTA packs.

The biggest memorabilia addition to Topps, though, are 30 1/1 Ultimate Chase Autograph Relics — a mix of cuts, booklets and jumbo patches  all with autographs. Look for bat knobs, patches and more for the likes of Babe Ruth, Roberto Clemente, Nolan Ryan and Stan Musial among others.

Lastly, the insert card lineup will be comprised of unsigned/non-memorabilia versions of six sets mentioned above — Chasing History (50 cards), Chasing the Dream (25), Cut to the Chase (25), The Greats (30), Calling Cards (15)and 1972 Minis (50). The Greats will be a Hobby-exclusive with a Gold parallel version limited to just 99 copies. That set will include Ernie Banks, Johnny Bench, Roberto Clemente, Ken Griffey Jr., Rickey Henderson, Derek Jeter, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez and Mike Schmidt.

Players already committed to have autographs in the product, according to the preliminary checklist, are Griffey, Mays, Reggie Jackson, Stan Musial, Ryan, Henderson, Evan Longoria, Don Mattingly, Trevor Bauer, Gary Carter (stickers), Brett Lawrie, Buster Posey, Giancarlo Stanton, Frank Thomas, Mike Moustakas, David Price, Jose Bautista, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mike Schmidt to name a few.

For player-used Relics, expect to find Yoenis Cespedes, Yu Darvish, Prince Fielder, Griffey, Bryce Harper, Josh Hamilton, Musial, Ripken, Ryan, Stephen Strasburg, Mike Trout, Justin Verlander, Derek Jeter and many others.

I think it’s a solid design. It’s simple with enough color. The name is easily seen and read. And they included a team logo with a decent size. The curved bottom of the photo is the only slight issue I have with it. It might affect the photos that they can use. But that’s still fine. It makes it distinct from other sets. I like it.

I’m assuming the colored border will be associated with every team. If it’s blue for all of them, then that will be bad.

Is the pink representative of anything? Breast Cancer Awareness, etc? I hope so, otherwise, if that’s the color of the normal parallels, that’s awful.

@Jaypers413

Pink. Seriously?

Not really in love with the design. It has a similar feel as the 2012 set, the same font as 2010 and a weird little illustration like 2004. Also, the player position is absent once again. The little home plate is gonna look weird if it’s the same shiny foil as the player name. To me, this seems about 2 to 3 revisions from being done.

It is likely Breast Cancer Awareness — we’ll have more details soon.

Yes, the pink is for Breast Cancer Awareness, just like the 2012 football set.

Honestly it looks kind of bland to me. Although I thought the same about this years set until I actually had a pack in my hands. Sometimes the preview images just don’t do justice.

They released a picture of the pink bordered card on their twitter page. They said nothing as to what if anything it represents. That being the case, the pink is just awful. It certainly clashes with the orange in the photo they released. There’s no way I will be buying this with those in it. I just don’t understand what they were thinking with it. But it’s one of the worse Topps cards I’ve ever seen!

I’m not sure yet they are a bit to plain for me and what’s the deal with the little grey spot above all their first names ?

Please tell me they’re bringing back gum and ditching the glossy card backs for 2013.

Sad to see it looks like they’re are going to be inserts again. I don’t remember anyone complaining about the lack of inserts in the ’83 set.

The baseball diamond looks like it’s something out of Star Trek. Regardless, I like this design. I can’t wait to see the sell sheet details.

Very surprising! I figured the 2013 design would be another variation on previous years and although there are some similarities, I can certainly see this set being very collectible. I can’t wait to see what some of the Mets cards look like!

I guess I am the only one that thinks this design looks awesome!! I can’t wait for it to come out, I also think that since the MLB does a lot of support with the breast cancer and 4th of July hats that I think it would be really cool if they had images with them swinging pink bats or wearing the camo hats/uniforms. This is making me excited for 2013!

Ross really some weird little illustration, it’s home plate, the foul lines, and the infield dirt, very appropriate and nicely done, if you ask me.

I love this design. It’s simple, and I like that the border is a baseball diamond design. I would say the pink cards are for breast cancer awareness, which are really cool considering my mom is a survivor.

Will have to see this in person, as pictures often do not do the card justice. What’s up with the 1972 style cards? I’m really getting tired of Topps re-using designs. Not that I collect Heritage, but these and this years Archives are really diluting that brand.

at first glance I didn’t love them, didn’t hate them. But they are starting to grow on me. I would have loved to see the same design they used for 2012 football.

So, will the memorabilia say game used on the front, and a COA that is meaningless on the back?
I want something that explicitly says it was used by the specific player in a MLB official game, preferably
the season or at least the decade if it not 100% known.

The Clemente an Ruth look nice, but I’m guessing those are not actual autographs as I’ve never seen
a Clemente auto that looked that way.

Posted August 17, 2012 at 3:03 pm | Permalink

Richard: The Clemente autograph is the same Photoshop mock they have used on Clemente mocks for years. As for the memorabilia, you’re not going to get a specific season because in many instances (as I think we have discussed in the past) it’s not even possible to date an item to a specific year.

If there are no short printed gimmicks than this will be step in the right direction because 2012 Topps was pretty much a watered down version of 2011.

At the end of the day I am still bored with Topps and really wish they would do something to change up their flagship brand. Maybe I can dream and hope they relaunch opening day as something other than partial parallel

Posted August 17, 2012 at 3:44 pm | Permalink

Meh. I don’t think the design is awful, but it’s not terrific. Most of the inserts are kind of bland, but I actually really like the 72 minis. I agree with Jeff-2012 Topps football is a pretty darn good design. Would have been interesting to see Topps work with that. Just my 2 cents!

Posted August 17, 2012 at 4:29 pm | Permalink

I agree with Ross. Nice cards but they’re back to making the designs too similar to others from recent years. I think it’s time to shake it up and worry less about the beauty of the photograph and focus more on a distinct design. When you see a 1975 Topps card or a 1952 or even a 1983, you KNOW what year it is. Topps should go back and give us something like a double image with colored borders a la the 1950s or something psychadelic like in the 70s. In 5 years who will be able to tell the difference from 2013, 2012, 2010, etc? I can hear it now: “Remember that year when Topps had that awesome design? You know the one…it had sharp, large, glossy photos with a thin, solid white border.” Yawn.

Boring. Doesn’t seem like they want to try anything bold. All those classic sets that they do reprints of ’72, ’75, ’87, etc. tried to be different. It’s like they don’t want to offend anybody so they just go with a bland design that they think will appeal to everyone. Don’t be afraid to fail!

The set looks kind of bland but that is how almost all of the Topps sets look to me. That’s ok though, its a cheap priced product that gets us all ready for the big stuff that comes out during the course of the year. I am excited about the inserts and the mem cards. I was pretty let down with the 2012 stuff and the 2013 inserts look so much better to me. I am pretty excited to see them all in person. This might be the first box of plain old Topps that I might have to buy instead of just a few packs.

I like what I have seen so far. Hope the photos are as good as 2011′s. 2012 was a step back in the photos. Flat colors, not bright like the 2011′s.

Nice base design. Too many inserts. Bout the same as usual.

Hate the manufactured trinkets stuck in boxes and called “relic cards”. They are neither relics nor cards.

Is Topps donating proceeds from the sale of products containing pink and camo cards to breast cancer or military charities? Doubtful.

No online code card promotion next year? Good. This year’s sucks.

Posted August 17, 2012 at 9:16 pm | Permalink

Ben, great catch. I forgot all about the code cards. After such a great and innovative promotion in 2010 and 2011, Topps really dropped the ball this year. The Golden Giveaway stinks. I’ve put in nearly 100 codes and have 4 cards to show for it. Getting random old cards was fun the past two years. It was neat to be reminded or get excited about getting a 1981 Mike Norris. Even when they have a great idea, they still manage to mess it up somehow. Here’s hoping they stick with Heritage. At least then we’re assured of getting today’s players on interestingly designed cards until at least 2038…God help collectors then when they get their Bryce Harper Jr card in a classic 1988 design!

Already making 2013 Topps baseball and the season aint even over yet. Looks simple and clean just like the past few years. The printing plates for the front of the cards have to be getting some OT in right now. Will there be a 2012 update traded / rookie brand this year? They should bring back the topps traded sets witha rookie auto in it!

Posted August 18, 2012 at 7:56 am | Permalink

I love it. Nice clean soft look with the players name and team logo and making the player’s photo stand out more. Really like the future art design of the baseball diamond to frame the card.

Posted August 18, 2012 at 9:52 am | Permalink

In my opinion the home plate design on this base card shouldn’t be the same color as the print for the players names. It’s confusing at first glance. It would also be interesting to see the Topps logo the same color as the team colors of the team player in each card. Example: White Sox, white or black Topps logo.

Posted August 18, 2012 at 10:53 am | Permalink

Ben: There will be an online website. Code cards are mentioned as one per jumbo pack on preview info but no details were given.

Cincy: They have to preview it early because orders have to be taken in the six months or so between now and when it arrives. It’s like this for every single product.

Absolutely love the look of the base cards. It’s simple, clean, and fits well in the lineage of Topps designs. I’m not so wild about the inserts, but I’m okay with that. That just means I won’t be chasing sets of those. On the other hand, I really like the Award Winners manufactured “relics”. Topps just needs to stop calling them relics, and I have a feeling that fewer people would take issue with them. We all just have to realize that these manufactured patches and pins and coins and whatever else they come up with are a new feature on some cards, just like gold foil and holograms were in the past. As long as they look good, and are not represented as something they are not, I would be glad to get one of those instead of a basic jersey card any day.

That’s a pretty nice design, and the ’72 relics look great… but I’m not a fan of those pink parallels.

The Topps designers are stuck in the last decade. Swoops and swooshes are out. As a graphic designer, if I didn’t know this was the 2013 design, I would have guessed it was circa 2001.

Are they still going to incorporate the Gold Trophy for All-Star Rookies. The Bryce Harper does not have one and has always been a trademark of Topps.

Also, since the 2012 update set did not feature rookies who played in 2012 like Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado, will they have rookie cards in the 2013 base set.

Posted November 29, 2012 at 1:56 pm | Permalink

William: The trophies should appear on cards in the 2013 set for the 2012 winners. Thie preview package of images was released before the awards were announced. Harper will likely have a pair of base cards — one with, one without — as Topps has done that the last couple of years. The late-season RC logo guys will likely get their ride next year rather than in just a couple of remaining products — makes more sense to build more demand for those early season cards next year.

These cards lack creativity. It’s always that same white border. I’m young in age, but I have many older cards that look so much better than regular cards today. Player poses, color selection, and setbuilding is truly what it is all about for me. What every card company does now is turn a kid’s passion into a free-market casino, where the rich can buy the most, and others have to wait or turn their backs on a set completely. Though I still collect actively, the industry has changed to a profit, a war between risk and return, and capturing the law of supply and demand. The autograph is great, but there needs to be affordable products to keep our younger ones active in the hobby. I remember in the mid 90s when insert cards were often inserted into every pack. There was nothing more exciting than pulling the insert of your favorite all-stars. Sadly, though the hobby is now set on the premise of value creation and not passion. This set is an example of this continuing trend.

Man do I hate all of the limited Parallel sets!!!!!!!

The cards cost WAY to much to collect. I really miss the days before all the limited cards came (early 1990′s and before) Boxes of cards were $15 to $20.

I also really miss Upper Deck.

Hey. I am just so damn tired of SP’s and parallels…that I can figure out which is which. This is the flagship base set & it should be just a great or at least Fresh design 1-331 & that’s it. A gold or silver parallel is just fine, the Mini’s should be left to a mini set (maybe glossy like Tiffany style) and Alan & Ginter (badly needs an update set…..not competition from Gypsies) & not yet another Prism of confusion, now in Pink. Remember when ya did need a price guide to collect & sell (if its your thing). A couple inserts, an Auto & a Relic. Heritage is for old designs. Is all this to simple…..is it that difficult to start solid and break out the power (Chrome, Platinum & a High End Auto/Relic Super set). Come back Upper Deck…….(Fleer & Donruss)!!!!!!!!

Two more things to chew on…..Topps, please try using the array of photo’s accumulated thru May/June and stick a different photo on the Chrome Card (which should become Bowman only….See Below). Kudos to junking the Rookie Card logo ( if I understand the articles correctly), My opinion always was I enjoyed figuring out the new Rookies every year in each sport and I leave with this hiccup of a comment, Bowman (until 2006) in main sets, now called Prospects/1st Year Cards wrecked the industry every bit as much as PED’s. Ya don’t get anything (A Rookie Card and todays goodies) til ya make the show. I know I am in the 10,000+ card club for Baseball Cards of stiffs who never made it or got very close. They do use Bowman only for the major Chrome Set and make it much, much larger sets with more than 50 rookies & stick those final 10 Cards as SP’s. IDK, make the Topps Traded a Platinum Set.
