First look: 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter baseball cards (with preliminary checklist)

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Eight won’t be enough for some collectors.

Topps released the basic information and additional images for its eighth edition of its Allen & Ginter baseball set on Friday, the latest installment of the “World’s Champions” approach to cards that include athletes from other sports as well as celebrities.

Set to arrive on July 17, it’s all in the style of the 1880s brands of the same name and the inclusions will be just as odd for this year’s edition as it was for the varying tobacco cards of that time.

As with past years, there will be three hits per box — a mix of autographs, Relics, buybacks, cuts, Rip Cards and more. New for 2013 will be Double Rip Cards as well as cabinet-sized book cards. Also among the new inclusions will be shadowboxed spider cards with actual mounted specimens (dead, of course) inside.

But what ultimately matters most to many? The autographs, and the 2013 crop is led by soccer legend Pele but also will include Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly and Olympian Lindsey Vonn alongside baseball greats such as Hank Aaron and Sandy Koufax.

Some of the other inclusions for autos? Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, sumo wrestler Byamba, basketball coach John Calipari, Mr. Olympia Phil Heath, paddle boarder Ekolu Kalama, NBA legend Bill Walton, Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden, musician Henry Rollins, figure skater Scott Hamilton, paintball champ Mattias Blonski, musician Ziggy Marley as well as models Chrissy Teigen and Chanel Iman.

Baseball signers of note include Yu Darvish, Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton, Manny Machado, Juan Marichal, Don Mattingly, Jim Palmer, Jim Rice, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mike Trout to name a few.

The base set will consist of 250 cards with MLB players from the past and present with the final 50 cards, as usual, being short-prints. The mini parallel lineup looks unchanged with standard mini, Allen & Ginter backs, black-border and no-numbers to go along with a new Allen & Ginter Baseball back. Those will be limited to 25 a la the Bazooka cards of earlier years. Also to be found for minis are 1/1 Wood, printing plates and a partial parallel set of 150 cloth cards, which will once again be limited to 10 copies.

The hobby-only box-toppers have some new inclusions this year with 1/1 cut signatures to be found along with Cabinet Book Relics — both being 1/1 cards that will challenge the traditional finds. There also will be standard auto and Relics among the offerings along with Wonders of the World as well.

For cut autograph fans, Topps promises a selection of 20 1/1 autos, while there will be ink found inside Rip Cards as well. The Rips, which are hobby-only, will include original art cards, Red autos limited to 10, mini exclusives (50 cards capping the set as in the past), mini exclusive Wood 1/1s and Rip Card Reserves, which are redemptions for full items.

The Double Rips are what you think — they are ripped from two sides and include two cards. These will be limited to just 10 copies per card and include cards that can only be found inside Double cards. There will be One of a Kind 1/1 cards that showcase firsts and unusual items in history — such as the Hope Diamond.

New for Ginter will be full-size Relic cards alongside the popular framed minis, which will have two different frame designs this year. Each box will not contain two cards of the same design. Also back to go with the Arachnology spider cards are DNA Relics  (1/1s) along with 1/1 Select Picks, which will be guitar picks used by notable musicians, inside the cards. Also to be found are “oddity Relics” which were not detailed in preview information.

Among the full-sized insert cards will be sets focusing on shared birthdays of MLB players (Across the Years, 100 cards), One Little Corner (celestial bodies), Palaces and Strongholds (20 cards), Martial Mastery (10 notable warriors) and a 20-card Civilizations of Ages Past set.

Mini inserts will include The First Americans — cards for Native American tribes — Inquiring Minds (philosophers), Heavy Hangs the Head (monarchs), Codes, Siphers and Cryptographs (10 famous codes), Peacemakers and Famous Finds.

I’d love to see one of the beautiful designs of Allen & Ginter applied to the Topps base set.

Looks good! I like the Allen & Ginter logo too. Not sure how I feel about the borders at this point. I guess I’ll wait to pass judgment when I’m actually holding the cards.

looks like last years 2 me

In my opinion, the best borders A&G has had (in it’s modern era) is the 2009 Black Mini border. This looks good too though, looking forward to more info!

I really wish A&G would update, upgrade, or just do something different. It looks like the same old same old.

Can’t wait to see more. A&G is my favorite product, and hopefully they continue the Ginter Code!

yep, most all of 2013 products are close to identical to 2012, they changed much from 2011 to 2012, but looks like they are happy with things at this time

Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. My wife and I love to rip A&G and I’m sure this will be no different!

No card company is going to reinvent the wheel from year one to year two if it sells well. If it sells well, you do it again.

I might just grab a box to have a go at that Coach Cal auto!

Love the base set design this year and am glad they did the rip-card inside a rip card (very fun).

However, I do not like the insert sets nearly as much this year. This is the one product I look to for set building. Also, I really miss no replacement for the State and Coin /50 box toppers of the last few years. I wish they would have done something similar. Those were my favorite sets to build over the last two years.

I don’t think the autograph list is as strong as last years as others are saying (especially the baseball autos- but many products will be weaker in 2013 without Yu and Bryce… and maybe Trout) but I think the non-baseball are pretty strong. Hopefully more top name autos are announced before release. Still determining whether to do my first multiple case break. I’m thinking now though that 2012 would have been better/more fun/more value.

Keep in mind that, as with the last few years, there likely will be more autos announced later.

Looks fantastic, love the idea of the Double Rip Card and am now anxiously awaiting 2014 quadruple Rip Card booklets, yes I thought of them first :)
The Black border minis look much better this year versus the last 2 years pseudo black check/black lines parallels
Enjoy to all the A&G fans, can’t wait!

Only product I will be opening this year.

Posted January 12, 2013 at 9:51 pm | Permalink

Pele, Ziggy Marley, McKayla Moroney, and Hank Rollins == AWESOME!!!

Double Rip Cards == STUPID!!!

Still too many non-parallel inserts for a product like this. Hopefully, Pele, Rollins, et al, will also be in the base set.

Posted January 12, 2013 at 10:52 pm | Permalink

I love A&G, but man, I hate those spider cards… I thought they would be redemptions like this year’s butterflies, now I hope they are so rare I won’t stand a chance to put my fingers on… brrrr…..

Dan C.

If Topps would spread the hits out just a little then I might not hate this product so much, but out of the 4 hobby boxes I’ve bought over the years I have pulled zero autos, zero rip cards, zero rare minis, and not even an sp relic. I’ve struck out every single time, and I know I’m not the only one, I see many box breaks and it seems like 1/3 of all boxes have nothing worth more than 3 bucks. But that one box in each case has 3 amazing hits.

Why only 250 cards in base set??? Not enough non-sport autos.

Ziggy Marley!? After ’12 A&G, I had planned on passing on this years…but I’m definitely gonna have to land a Ziggy Auto!

It’s 350 cards with 50 more in rips. Nos. 1-300 are standard and 301-350 are SPs. Simple typo which I will fix next time I log on.

I love the way the set looks. Beautiful cards, and this product is always a fun one. I can’t wait to see what surprises and unannounced things we’ll see in the set. Love the double rip cards, and I always love the interesting non-sport inserts. CAN’T WAIT!

Cabinet size book cards??? Droooooool

Hafta agree that out of a 12 box case ur only gonna see 1 or 2 boxes with decent value as far as hits go, but u can recoup a lot with set builders, minis, etc. As long as u know the odds going in, its a fun product

Looking forward to more James Loney, Vernon Wells and Alfonso Soriano relics… Not really!!!

You may be surprised to hear that I never buy hobby packs or boxes, and get all my packs only from Target. Why, you might ask? Well, it feels like cheating if I buy a hobby pack. Then, on the rare occasions when I do pull a relic, autograph or unusual mini, it seems truly special. Yes, I’m also looking forward to the Native Americans cards. But for the non-baseball players, I would like to see some celebrities who are a little more famous than the ones they now feature.

Wow…not one Phillie on the prelim auto checklist. Disappointing

Otherwise, I like the overall set list, some good old timers that haven’t appeared in the past in A&G (Catfish, Spahn, et. al.)

Thanks for posting, Chris

Can’t wait for this. Maybe I’ll buy a whole case as this looks fantastic. Are they doing the 2 types of box toppers again?

Really liked the bugs and butterflies…..Not interested in increasing scarcity of anything tho’………….maybe terrorists.

Will buy less unless autos are strong.
