Pitchers have fun with Career Chase in 2013 Topps

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

The arrival of 2013 Topps means the newest batch of Rookie Cards, stars and more to fill the cardboard annals of history.

It also means more trivia.

On the back of each and every standard card in the first series of 330 is a “Career Chase” line that notes a player’s progress in his chase of history. It’s one that in some instances shows how close players are — check Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez for example — but in others? Well, those aren’t all that close and some are downright comical.

The ironies of life in the game aren’t lost on some players, either.

Panini to eliminate MAPP pricing policy

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Collectors may see a difference in the price of hobby boxes soon.

Panini America announced the elimination of its MAPP (minimum advertised pricing policy) program, which will begin with the February 27 release of National Treasures baseball.

“The biggest benefit will be market liquidity,” said Panini’s Vice President of Sales D.J. Kazmierczak on Panini’s blog. “That approach will benefit everyone involved because it helps with inventory turns. In addition, this different approach will create more demand for pre-ordering product. That is something that we all prefer.”

‘Miracle on Ice’ jersey and stick to be sold through Heritage Auctions

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Hockey Editor

Michael Eruzione’s goal against the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics is probably one of the greatest American sports moments – a wrister that sailed into the back of the net, the winning goal in the “Miracle on Ice” game.

The U.S. went on to beat Finland in the championship game and took home the gold medal in Lake Placid, N.Y. A moment that stands as one of the best.

Now, Eruzione, captain of that legendary team, plans to sell 22 of his keepsakes from that Olympic run including two jerseys, the stick he scored the game-winning goal with against the Soviet Union through Heritage Auctions in February, the company announced today.

Kaepernick’s Rookie Card values see steady rise

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Colin Kaepernick’s status has risen with football fans and collectors in San Francisco. But there is still one place where Kaepernick’s cards remain more popular than the hometown – eBay.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has emerged as the NFL’s hottest player as his team heads to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.

Bay-Area card shops no longer have his cards in stock, so collectors have turned to the few outlets where they can find them.

“Interest has increased, but we sold out of his stuff,” said Stephen Tarantino, owner of Collector’s Cave in San Francisco. “It’s difficult to get them at a reasonable price, especially if we’re trying to get them off eBay. It just wouldn’t work.”

Check this out: Something old in something new from Beckett Grading Services

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

On one recent Saturday morning I came to work — a bit earlier than normal no less (don’t tell the boss) — to take advantage of a relatively new option from Beckett Grading Services.

And now that I’ve paid up and got my item back, well, naturally I wanted to show it off — and tell its story.

Better yet, I wanted you to, ahem, check it out.

Years ago, while still at the University of Alabama I set my sights on an autograph from Hall of Famer Joe Sewell (checklist and OPG) — the most highly decorated player in the history of its baseball program and a guy whose trivia in the game goes well beyond a 14-year career with the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. (Heck, I just learned a new piece of trivia today when looking him up — we share the same birthday.)

HIT PARADER: Non-traditional hits can bring variety to collections — and dollars to pockets

By Chris Olds | Editor

Admit it, you’ve been here before — you rip into a pack, see a thick card and that rush of excitement is thwarted by a plain white swatch of a guy you’ve seen a dozen times before.

It doesn’t always have to be that way.

As you’ll see in the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly — The Hits Issue — what is a hit can vary from person to person and they can vary even more from product to product. If you dabble in some of the hobby’s multi-sport creations or in the non-sport realm, you can find even more variety in hits.
