First Look: 2013 Topps Big League Minis

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

Topps is getting into the game with the stars of the game.

The company announced Friday that it’s bringing MLB to the packaged vinyl figures area with 2013 Topps Big League Minis — a collection of 28 3-inch vinyl figures that are packaged like cards. The blindly wrapped collectibles niche has been one that has grown in the last few years via non-sports properties.

Set to arrive on June 12, Big League Minis will show players and will have chase variation figures as well. They will sell for about the same price as a pack based on factory cost, though a suggested retail price was not announced.

See a visual checklist of the figures … after the jump.

Beckett 20 Questions on … the ‘other’ sports

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

We all know that the collecting world has changed immensely in the last 20 years with explosive growth and massive shrinkage for the mainstay types of sports — baseball, football, basketball and hockey — at varying times as card companies came and went and as labor strife took its toll on fans’ heartstrings.

But, at the same time, one could argue that the “other” sports out there have seen plenty of growth, too, as more and more sports — and some sort-of sports — have made their appearances on cards. You may not find them in every shop or every card aisle at retail every day, but they are out there and they have their passionate collecting bases that keep those products coming back year after year.

In the next issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, we’ll take a look at those sports that don’t normally get as much attention — racing, MMA, soccer, boxing, Olympic sports, wrestling, tennis, rodeo and more. Here are 20 questions that we hope you’ll take the time to answer to appear in this next issue.

1. Do you actively collect something other than the "big four" (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) sports?

Beckett Certified Appraisal launches

Beckett Media is proud to announce Beckett Certified Appraisal, an exciting new service that will give values to rare and unique cards.

There are cards don’t have values in Beckett’s price guides based on scarcity, but this new service will have the Beckett Price Guide analysts research sales data and market trends to give values to cards such as those with low print runs, show exclusives or graded cards with a low population report.

Beckett Certified Appraisal will analyze data to get a fair assessment of a card’s value.

To take part in the service, customers do not need to send in their cards. They email images and can choose either a one- or five-day service up to five cards starting at $15. Customers will receive a certificate as a PDF file in return.

First look: 2013 Upper Deck Football

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

How high can Adrian Peterson’s cards go?

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Quarterbacks. Quarterbacks. Quarterbacks.

That’s pretty much what everyone talks about when it comes to football cards. The reason is that they usually sell well. Even a mediocre quarterback in the NFL could be sold for a decent price because these guys push the league.

However, it seems Adrian Peterson is making a case for running backs once again.

Oyo Sportstoys adds football to its lineup

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Football Editor

Oyo Sportstoys started its business on the diamond, but the company is expanding to the gridiron.

The company creates building block-type of minifigures that resemble Legos. Many parts are interchangeable, so in case your favorite player is traded or signs with a new team, you can always get a new helmet.

The football figures won’t be ready until after the Jan. 1, 2013, but Oyo is taking orders on its website for more than 100 available players from the 32 NFL teams.
