Greg McElroy has thrown seven passes in his entire NFL career. Yet, that’s all sports fans in and around New York City wanted to talk about this week.
New York Jets fans have wanted quarterback Mark Sanchez benched for some time, but running into the back of his own lineman during a 49-19 loss to the New England Patriots solidified that stance. Some wanted Tim Tebow to be the answer, but with fractured ribs, the people’s champion wasn’t going to get a chance.
Enter McElroy, the Jets seventh round draft pick in 2011.
On Sunday, he completed 5-of-7 passes for 29 yards in the fourth quarter, including the only touchdown of the game. It was enough to beat the Arizona Cardinals 7-6.
Despite McElroy’s NFL career being in non-existent to this point, he has many football cards already. As seen by the picture below, McElroy has 195 football cards, including 19 Rookie Cards (Click here for a McElroy checklist or OPG).
Even though his Jets life has been short, McElroy came from the University of Alabama. He has a number of cards depicting him in his college uniform.
This is a good time for Alabama fans as the Crimson Tide will meet Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship game on Jan. 4. McElroy knows understands what the current Alabama players are feeling.
He started his last two years for Alabama (2009-2010), and as a junior led his team to a 14-0 record and a national championship.
His Alabama cards might be more popular than his Jets cards right now.
Here are some of his Alabama cards in the Beckett database below.
