Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan highlight 2012 SP Authentic Golf

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Collectors have had to wait about eight years for a new golf set from Upper Deck.

In that time, we’ve seen some great tournament runs and golfers endure rises and falls. This week marked the return of SP Authentic Golf from UD highlighting some of the most popular male and female golfers.

Golfers in the set include Tiger Woods, Mike Weir, Brittany Lincicome, Cristie Kerr and See Ri Pak.

But the most popular cards in SP Authentic might not even come from professional golfers. Upper Deck has included a Parade of Stars subset featuring celebrities who enjoy hitting off the tee.

Michael Jordan is one of the biggest names of this subset, which comes in autographed and non-autographed form. The autograph versions of this card is listed online for about $3,000 right now.

Other non-pro golfers in the Parade of Stars subset include
Hockey legend Bobby Orr
Baseball Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt
Soccer star Landon Donovan
New York Giants legend Lawrence Taylor

The golf product doesn’t just feature all the best male athletes.

The women get good play in SP Authentic as well. LPGA stars Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer are some of the big signers. They are popular on the tour with many fans and girls who look up to them.

Even with their popularity among golf fans, their autographs are still reasonably priced.

The podcast Sports Card Radio mentioned this release the other day. Made some good points about the pros of collecting golf cards. The Woods and Jordan are just a few good reasons to check out this set.

Um, no.
The Jordan is not SELLING for $3000, people are ASKING that and not yet getting it.
Now it is early, but while I can see someone being happy to pull the auto, I don’t think
there will be too many people shelling out the big bucks to get it.

I was much more impressed by the 1/1 Ben Hogan cut, which only sold for $300.

i can’t wait to hear what Buster Brown has to say about this product. He’s so in-the-know and full of great, positive comments about UD. He’s the smartest poster on here.

Autos are on card and good for Upper Deck. I bought my case on Wednesday and first box in I pulled the Tiger Woods Auto Swatch and sold it within 4 hours for $700. Fourth box in I pulled a redemption for Sign of the Times 7 auto of Creamer/Kerr, Lincicome and I forgot the other four but it was a big hit and only wished Upper Deck could have had this packed out. Unfortunately I will probably have to wait a long time for all 7 signers but can’t wait for the card to come in. Overall the product is loaded and still have 8 boxes to crack. Rory will be in next year’s product which will help a lot.

sportkings cuts don’t sell for much, there’s a very limited market for non licensed cards

Fail, epic fail. Shelled out $115 for a box and was extremely disappointed….Would have rather purchased a great single card for this price or donated the money to charity or even flushed it down the toilet than suffer though this rip. I

Hits…Martin Laird Rookie Auto 142/699, Sara Borwn Auto, Mike Weir Auto, Mark Calcavecchia Auto

Rookie based cards; Web Simpson, Spencer Levin, Bo Van Pelt, Gary Woodland, Kyle Stanley

Parade of stars – weak and unnecessary.

Design is poor and dated.

Where’s Rory, Dustin,, Bubba, Sneds and the rest of the hot young stars?

I would have preferred one crappy auto in exchange for better rookie base cards or even a complete set of base cards. I normally dont spend this kind of money on a box and this is exactly why..
