First look: 2012-13 Panini Prizm basketball cards

By Chris Olds | Beckett Basketball Editor

Panini America‘s next new basketball line will perhaps have collectors looking at NBA cards a different way.

Through a prism … or Prizm.

When it arrives on Oct. 24, 2012-13 Panini Prizm will arrive, as the company puts it, “a familiar, but dramatically improved technology that has been missing from the Basketball hobby.”

Mocked up to be printed on what appears to be chromium-like stock, Prizm will consist of a 300-card base set that includes 100 rookies. Each 20-pack box, suggested retail price $100), will include two autographs, two Prizms parallels and two inserts. There will be six cards per pack and 12 boxes per case.

Each card will have Prizm and Gold Prizm parallels for the standard cards, while there also will be 100 autographs — also each having Prizm versions.

The product will include four insert sets, one showcasing the 2012 USA Basketball team, another featuring 25 Most Valuable Players and one focusing on NBA Finalists. The fourth insert set was not revealed.

Based on the sales materials that I have seen I thought that the 100-card autograph set was considered an insert. Could that be the 4th insert or is there another unanounced insert set that will be added before the release date?
