First look: 2012 Press Pass Showcase Racing

Press Pass Showcase Racing arrives at the end of May, celebrating a couple of different milestones.

First, the product is marking its four-year anniversary and not taking the occasion lightly. Press Pass promises “a boost” to the high-end release. The three-pack hobby box (five cards in each pack) promises a premium auto or relic in every pack.

Collectors can look for:

・ Autographed memorabilia cards including Prized Pieces Ink, which are autographed over-sized memorabilia cards
・ Masterpieces Ink autograph cards featuring two, three, or four swatches of race-used memorabilia
・ Limited edition Classic Collection team-signed autograph cards
・ A new autograph line of Showcase Champions Ink featuring autographed memorabilia cards from six major champions in NASCAR history.

So where is the boost?

Press Pass is offering Showcase Signature Patches, autographed book cards with an authentic sponsor patch that are numbered to two or less. The pictures provided by Press Pass show these booklet cards before the signatures were added.

The patches alone make for a great card, but the autograph should add an element a high-end product deserves. It seems many of the big names are including: Danica Patrick, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Travis Pastrana (Click on the pictures below to get the full image).

The second milestone Showcase is celebrating is Richard Petty‘s 75th birthday on July 2. There will be a series of cards in Showcase with top drivers throughout history sending Petty their well wishes.

Boxes of this set get much cheaper EVERY year! They seem to be trying to add to the value (or sell price) by adding left-overs from Five-Star and adding a few new goodies. After paying $256 for my 2009 box (8 months after the release) and seeing them sell for about $100 less per box for the ’10 AND ’11 boxes of the exact same thing ON the release date…
I am glad I couldn’t afford to buy them/didn’t waste money on them.
I am just tired of this release. I am not spending $150+ for a box of 15 cards. PP is a GREAT company, but with all the new brands they are releasing they should do 1 of 2 things with this one. They should add a pack or two per box OR drop the box price below $120.
Fanfare was the best new PP release in many years and I got 8 five-card packs for almost $120 and there was an AU or RU in every pack also. I thought Fanfare was much more pleasing than Showcase, both in terms of product design/packout and I got a better value for the money I spent.
PP is the best card company, but Showcase has wore out its welcome with me. I do wish PP would stop trying to re-invent sets they had already made spectacular. VIP is GONE and apparently Eclipse is GONE. Those were my 2 fav. sets and they dumped both, BUT they still make cards from the ‘Wheels’ brand. That is what they should dump–all of the Wheels sets! Premium is still around, but it isn’t really a premium set anymore. I still like Premium but it just doesn’t live up to it’s name anymore.
Anyway, I’m going to stop ranting now. Sorry for typing so much. ;)
