First look: 2012-13 NBA Hoops

Panini America‘s first post-lockout season for NBA cards is winding down and that means one thing.

It’s time for a look at 2012-13 — and from all accounts it will be a card calendar loaded with more than three times as many releases as 2011-12 … and twice as many Rookie Cards than a normal year.

Arriving in August, 2012-13 NBA Hoops will include a 300-card base set which will include Rookie Cards for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 NBA Draft classes. There will be two autographed cards found in every 36-pack hobby box. (Need a checklist or OPG for a past Hoops set? Click here.)

 

Just like this past season, there will be a rare single-player chase card — a Kevin Durant “Durantula” card this time — as well as autographed buybacks from the inaugural 1989-90 set. Also included for collectors to chase will be an NBA champions card.

Rounding out the offerings will be several insert card sets — Draft Night Signatures, Kobe’s All-Rookie Team, Rookie Impact and Spark Plugs.

Hmmm, there is one thing in this article that I wasn’t necessarily fond of and it has nothing really to do with Hoops. More than three times this years number of products? So more than 15? Holy crap. That’s far too many products for one company, especially when probably three or fewer of those products will start below $100 MSRP. And those that are above it, give you fewer cards.

As far as this product goes, it looks like a pretty good product. Will have to wait and see what the MSRP is, number of cards per pack, and the checklist. :)

Looks good but, my god, that NBA Hoops logo is HUGE on the base design. Panini has a hard time making their logos look good within a design.

looks awsome getting rookie class from 2011-12 and 2012-13 cant beat that 2 for the price of one,lets see upper deck do that. does everone agree out there.

Not buying boxes of Hoops 2012-13… dislike the design… Three times as many products!! OUCH!! Can’t afford to buy every product, so Hoops will be crossed off my list of future products to buy…

More David Robinson RC Buybacks?? That’s a failure. They should keep it a limited amount of autos… A RC buyback of older cards should be special… maybe release them every 5-10 years… not in back to back products… maybe Panini had some left over that was not put in Hoops 2011-12.

I do like the Hoops 12-13 large check list (300 base set)… but with the superstars having 3 or more cards each… forget it.. I’d like to see cards of players that don’t have basketball cards.. especially if it is just base cards… forget the autos of unpopular players.. because nobody would want them..

Panini is going to to get my hard earned money on this product… I rather pick up some single autograph cards on the secondary market… cheaper!!

I can’t wait for Panini’s exclusive NBA trading card license ends. Their overall body of work has been lackluster at best.
