That is a very sweet booklet!
.
On the topic of Serial numbered sets. I have to say , coming from a collectors point of view, not a business or sellers standpoint. I like to see these more sought after players, auto's, killer patches. Come out in higher numbered sets. I have a hard time pulling out even a couple hundred from of my wallet to buy a hobby box. My wallet snaps shut faster then I can grab out one of my credit cards. The reason this is, is because I seem to have no luck i guess. When I AM able to snatch out my credit card, and pay $200, I usually . actually I never have gotten that great hit, or even a great card at all. usually walking away feeling like I just got robbed. Myself anyways cant afford, or could not really justify buying a case. Which would prolly get me that big hit. But that "BIG HIT" would be from my wife, with most likely a skillet.
.
To sum it up. Higher chances of getting a great card in a box, would help sell more boxes to the average collector. Who might trade it away. Or just bast in the moment of actually pulling a nice card for once. Instead of frantically throwing the box and all the wrappers in the garbage outside before you wife see's you got yet nothing again for your $200.** A nice Crosby auto is sweet no matter if its out of 10 or 100**

Tens of thousands of dollars a year spent on cards, Anthony? man. That's a lot. Though I'm not gonna fib, if I had lots of money, I'd probably spend most of it on cards too. Cards and macadamia nuts. Still it's nice to have a reasonable shot at getting a jersey card. I stopped collecting around 2001 and just recently started again, and I was surprised to learn how relatively obtainable jersey cards now are. That also means they're worth less, but whatever. Back in the day, they were little more than a fantasy for a collector like me--a golden ticket, if you will. You couldn't expect the jersey cards to trickle down to the common collectors who could only afford a few packs at a time. That's why a redistribution of jersey cards is so important: it raises the quality of collecting for the proletarian collectors. And if they're content, then there's less chance of an uprising. I'm not sure what an uprising would even mean within the context of this hobby. But let's not find out.

I mostly collect for personal value, not necessarily what something's worth in the book (though I do care about that too). I've been rambling a bit up until now, but let me try to make one point: an auto card numbered to 50 is still pretty damn rare, and will still be plenty valuable simply because of the players on the card. If they made 500 of them, I could maybe see your point, but 50 is still decently rare.

There's obviously a market for $500 packs, otherwise they wouldn't exist. I like them. I buy them from time to time. And this kinda stuff kills the value and of them. Are you saying there should be multiple 6-autograph cards #/50-150 in cheaper products like Donruss or Victory just because people cannot afford a $500 product. Is this an Occupy Wall Street thing? I don't buy into the idea of giving the general public a better chance of pulling a nice card cause I'm sure they amped up the overall production and it's still a sliver of people who are gonna pull a card like this. But when the dust settles and cases have been ripped, there's just too much of it out there. It'll be 50 this year, 100 of them next year with 5 more combinations. the year after that, it'll be 150, etc... This is about economics and about supply and demand. The best way to kill a good thing in this industry is overproduction.

Anthony: How do you feel about $500 super-premium packs? Clearly those down interest in key cards found elsewhere ... would you rather have only one good brand that only a tiny sliver of the overall collecting population could afford?

I would rather it be a rare card. They're overproducing or making multi-auto cards worth a lot less with 50 of them out in the market. From an industry standpoint, this should be a real concern. How is anybody going to justify paying $300-500 for Dominion/National Treasures a box when the hits aren't really hits anymore? I can see it now: a 6 or 8 autograph card coming out of Dominion/NT is not going to generate much excitement when you can pull a near identical card in a cheaper product like Contenders. They'll probably insert a cockamamie redemption like a 40 auto booklet card again. They're cannibalizing themselves.

Case in point:15 years ago, pulling a jersey card was amazing. You find 2-4 a box now and they're virtually worthless. In reality, I'm concerned about opening a box and seeing that all the cards that were once big hits become 'normal' worthless hits. I spend tens of thousands of dollars on cards a year, and the value of a box is diminishing every single year. The fun of card buying/collecting is to pull a card that's rare and highly sought after, and this doesn't seem like a great idea.

It's not like there's been a lot of creativity the last few years either. So I don't know how you can introduce value to a product when their idea is to insert 10 shades or parallels or worse, SSPs of Chris Neil!!

Anthony: Would you rather it be an impossible pull or a 1/1? I wouldn't. I'd rather more collectors be happier -- even at the expense of the dollar value of a "big" card.

How can you ruin a 6 card autograph of Lemieux, Yzerman, Sakic, Brodeur, Pronger, and Niedermayer? By making the print run so high. 50?? Pretty soon there's going to be nothing exciting about buying cards.

It's like ruining logoman patches. I hate where the hobby is headed.
