Panini’s 2011-12 Titanium Hockey marks another brand revival

By Andrew Tolentino | Hockey Editor

Over the weekend Panini America gave collectors a sneak peek at the latest chapter in its hockey brand revival saga. This time, the card maker took us back to the early 2000s to reawaken Pacific Trading Cards product Titanium Hockey.

Retaining original Rookie Card appeal and updated to meet current hobby standards, 2011-12 Titanium Hockey will hit  the streets in April — seven years after the brand’s last installment. As Panini’s Tracy Hackler noted, the original Pacific Trading Cards release featured Rookie Cards limited to each player’s jersey number. “The brand took scarce RCs to an entirely new level and created tremendous buzz every step of the way.” Revamped with fresh faces, autographs and memorabilia, the new-look Titanium line is a tribute to the not-so-distant past.

Aside from the potential of pulling a limited-to-93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Rookie Card, Titanium offers a number of attribute-heavy subsets like Home Sweaters Autographs, Hat Tricks, Four Star and Six Star multiple memorabilia pieces, Quad Memorabilia Autos and Game-Worn Gear Patches.

Details, details

  • Each pack comes with  a $20 SRP
  • Four cards per pack
    • One autograph or memorabilia card per pack
  • Five packs per box
  • 16 boxes per case
    • One Rookie Card limited to the player’s jersey number in each case

Dear Panini;
Can you not produce something original that doesn’t have a 25 dollar a pack price tag on it?

Shouldn’t the Nugent-Hopkins card read “Edmonton Oilers”, not “Edmunton Oilers”?

hi, we are panini and we are just re-hashing everything in the past that was semi-successful…you see, we have to do that because we have no original ideas. thanks for understanding….
now give us your money and we will give you cards worth roughly 25% of srp

David, Great eye on the Edmunton. I sure hope that is not the card in the product.

There’s a reason why Pacific & Pinnacle closed up shop. Is anyone at Panini familiar with what happened over there? Quit using these bankrupt brands and develop something new.

Bring back Wild Card!!! :-) I agree with coming up with original ideas but the cards do look pretty nice. Having original ideas these days seems to be remixes and remakes of old creative and truley original ideas. You see it happening in the Card business as well as Music business…..Where have all the creative minds gone????

I can’t lie… I like the redesigns. This product looks sleek, although the “Edmunton” is fairly obvious. However, I feel like it’s pulling teeth to see a new product that’s design might be an original. I can understand the risks in a design “failing”, but I can only own so many cards that look alike. I think when they rehash designs that have failed, they are saying “here’s our trash”.

Could an original product drive the market? Maybe, but could it hurt to try?
